world famous bobski mystery thing, pic #145

well, i can figure out its telescope, but the mystery is , for what or 'to' what? it weighs a ton. only markings are 'TELESCOPE' PAT DATES 1903-1907.

    Well-the 1903 date would put it earlier than the armored tank- so possible naval gunnery?

    I believe it would be for aiming one of the Howitzers, but which one I don't know.

    Are there any markings or reiticles that would suggest a range finder ?

    no. just simple crosshairs.
    by making me look, i did find an anchor, so its navy related. could this be a spotting scope or a lookouts scope? oddly, i has two viewing ports. one straight thru and on offset. both look in the same scope.

    It looks like it hooks up to a garden hose. Maybe mounts on your pistol grip nozzle for high tech water fights back in the day.[:D]

    It looks like it is, or should be, part of a optical range finder. Baring that it would be used by the gunner for plotting the fall of the shot
