Eating Dirt???
Heard tell of such, but saw it in person yesterday. Woman was munching on what appeared to be a piece of red shale.
I asked her, "Are you chewing on a rock?"
She said it isn't a rock, but "east Texas clay," and that it is supposed to be good for her skin.
I pointed out that a lot of clay has lead and other bad stuff in it, and can damage the central nervous system, brain, eyesight, etc.
She said her mother gets it for her in east Texas, and that she has eaten it all her life, and so has her mother and grandmother.
I said, "Well, that could explain a lot."
She didn't get it. Ate too much dirt, I reckon.

My dad tells me that mainly black folks would swear that yep, you could eat red clay, and that some of his students would bring it for lunch. 0 -
run a google search for "pica eating disorder" 0 -
I know pregnant women at times may get the urge to do that, but only because the pregnancy is throwing their body chemistry out of whack.
But doing it voluntarily? Well, she did say East Texas...0 -
I've heard of people taking dirt pills in order to get some nutrient that food now is lacking. 0 -

condition is known as "Pica"
Very common amomg Southern Blacks.
Here they prefer the white chalky clay. They come out here to farm and dig it out of the banks. Some convenience stores have the chalk packaged in zip lock bags(not labeled for consumption). When I worked in Alabama they had a woman die from chalk impaction of the intestinal tract. We had a tenant house where they ate the mortar between the bricks0 -
actually clay is a cleanser, its cleans your system, but i think its certain clay not just any old clay. there's a certain bird i forget what one but it naturally eats clay b/c if it didn't it would die. the bird eats poison berry's or cherry's which are nutritious but would kill it other wise. Clay can be good for you, ever go down the isles at Walmart around the pharmacy 0 -

I guess you are talking about kaolin and attapulgite which are indeed used in the treatment of diarrhea.
Pica is entirely different.0 -
well yea but there are pills and what not that are advertised as cleansers so to speak. not sure if they do give you diarrhea and what not but they clean your system of bad chemicals. iits actually be proven to clean your system. 0 -
I was told by my whole family that as a child that I would take a spoon outside and eat dirt. I guess that's where my son got it. We could always tell when he had been eating dirt because of the gritty nature of his dirty diapers!! 0 -
yep, that's zactly what I read about it years ago, southern black pregnant women would get the urge to eat clay, they liked the white clay. I read that since it was sort of looked down upon, they'd go in groups after dark, their husbands would stand by the car with the headlights on while they dug up some clay from the side of the road, or go down to a creek bank or whatever. in georgia or alabama you might be driving at night and go past a bunch of women munching on clay on the side of the road, got white stuff all over their faces. 0 -
When I was in middle school and old teacher told me that during the depression it was common for people (both white and black) to eat clay to get certain nutrients like iron and calcium that were missing in their regular diets. 0 -
I still eat the bababooey, didn't know whites didn't 0
