Tipping workmen **Done and Updated with PICS**
The fence is done and I gave them $40 to split. I am very pleased with the outcome!
I'm havng a fence installed today - 3 sections, 3 gates, 45 ft, not too much. It should take the 3 guys about 3-4 hours tops.
Should I tip them? How much?
We are paying $2000 for the fence.

It depends if they are employees or the actual contractor,employees I normaly order pizza and sodas for there lunch as a tip or give them 40bucks to go get lunch! A contractor never, the money is going right in there pocket already. Hope that helps. 0 -

When I had an addition put on the house (took two months) I left a full cooler every day, with bottled water,, soda's and beer. The understanding was that the beer was for the END of the shift. [:0]Maybe THAT's why it took two months? 0 -

My cousin installs brick patio's and driveways. A lot of home owners do this. The real nice home owners buy Mexican beer for Mexican employees.0 -

This is kind of my thought. I can see giving them water or pop but not cash. They make their money working for an hourly rate. It's not like a person that is waiting tables and gets a small hour rate plus tips.

Kindness never hurts. I think that was a very reasonable gesture. Cold drinks and water sounds very nice too. I like the beer offer after the day is finished long as they do not over indulge. 0 -

When my wife and I decided to have an addition built onto our house, we made sure there was icy-cold soda and water in a cooler for 'em every day. My wife is a great believer in nice gestures. On the occasional Friday, there was beer there, too.
I do know that what we did was unusual, since they didn't touch the stuff for the first two days. Until we told them that it was there for them. They were surprised and delighted.0 -

alright, alright I'll admit it, i tipped a few cows when i was young, but i was drunk, and they had pretty faces[:D]0 -
i tip someone if they do a good job, cable guy did a real nice job hiding all the wire, took his time, set up everything right, BAM! 20 bucks. 0 -
That looks really good. A place I was renting before I left CA needed a new fence, so the landlord hired someone -- three mexicans show up and they've built something that 6 months later started cracking warping and basically falling apart, not to speak that quality of workmanship was beyond low. I guess he just didn't care much for quality.

I was going to just leave it natural. I'm not sure if I should put a coat of water sealer on it. It is pressure treated pine.
For those of you that remember my nazi old hag of a neighbor, she made sure to poke her head out a few times to ensure nothing was touching her fence or was on her property.0 -
Even pressure treat will be gray in a couple of seasons. Best to treat it. 0 -

You need to let it set for several months before you treat it.
You can get stain or clear coat, it will help to protect the wood.
Be warned, pressure treated wood will warp in the sunshine like you won't believe. Don't be surprised if, in six months, one or two of those gates don't close anymore.0 -
I put in 450ft of privacy fence myself for under $5000. At that rate you were charged, they were paid plenty of money. 0 -
