For the first time, I watched this show yesterday.
I figured these truckers would be some of the all time bad asses of the Canadian north woods.
Instead, some of them are wimps and cry babies.
I saw one guy who drove his truck into a ditch one day.
Another day, he ran out of fuel, in town, while on the way to the gas station. He kept blaming everybody else for his problems. He quit/got fired on the same day.
Another guy named TJ was cranking down on that big steel bar to chain down his load. This little boy weighed about 120 pounds. He let the bar get away from him, and he got slammed into the side of the truck.
Two days later, his side was hurting him. He was weeping and moaning so much on camera, I figured he had some cracked ribs and a punctured lung, maybe a damaged liver. These are things you can die from.
He pulled in to the next town, and put on such a show, that they flew him out in an airplane ambulance.
As the narrator said, "TJ was injured so badly he had to be medevaced out by air ambulance."
No, in fact TJ was medevaced because he is a little wimp.
He was not admitted to the hospital. After six hours there, he was diagnosed with torn chest muscles, and sent back to the motel. He was told that he was perfectly fit to drive a truck.
Christ, what a crybaby! He was sitting in the ER saying, "I could have died."
Proof that there is a God: The boy TJ has to pay the $10K hospital/medevac bill.
On another occasion, TJ was in a four truck convoy. The plan was, they would drive until 9pm. They would pull into a truck stop, and sleep in their cabs for a while. At 2:30 am, they would rise, and set out again, and drive until late that afternoon. Imperative that they stick together, because a bllizzard was expected that afternoon.
The convoy set out as planned. The trucks had been driving for a while, when they noticed there was no TJ. The other three trucks had to keep going, to beat the blizzard. For all they knew, TJ had driven off the road, and was at the bottom of the lake.
The three trucks made it to their destination ok, not knowing if their buddy was dead or alive.
Later the next day, up drove TJ.
He hadn't felt like getting up at 2:30, although he did wake up at that time. So he just rolled over and got three hours more sleep, and missed the convoy.
    What a punk!

I was surprised to see so many crybabies and whiners driving the ice road.

On the other hand, some of the guys looked like Paul Bunyan, such as a character named Hugh.
Wouldn't want to mess with Hugh.

Alex and Jay were, I think, the only people on that show that I'd actually want to meet. And you know what else? They're the only people featured on the show that actually live in Yellowknife. All the other guys are temporaries for the ice road season. Hugh is an jerk who doesn't maintain his trucks and expects the people that he hires, who've never driven the ice road before, to be able to keep up with him when they have broken trucks half the time, and not always because they were stupid drivers. Hell, even Hugh had to check his truck into the maintenance shop for 2 days because he didn't have it checked out before hitting the ice.

If you want to talk about some truckers with real balls, take a look at the logging truck drivers that haul huge loads of logs out of the Rocky mountains on a sheet of ice all winter long. These forrest roads are barely wide enough for a vehicle to fit on and drop straight off over 1000' in some places...these truckers run up and down them all winter long...most of these trucks are pulling tandem trailers.

These guys are just a cross section of truck drivers. Just because the go to drive on ice is no reason for them to be anything special.

I had 16 years with no chargeable accidents before I got hurt to were I could not work anymore.

I agree that it may not be more dangerous in some ways, but I still think it would be the ultimate challenge for a driver to run those roads!

It is more that just driving over those lakes! It is the extreamly long hours (a whole lot more than most any driver ever runs on the highway) the size and weight of the loads along with weather factors and such!

I have too! But they are running like that for over 2 months!

When I would do it at least after a few days I could get a good crash in![;)]

And I have also ran some of the oversized stuff as well. The largest I have hauled is a D-9 Cat, so I do know a thing or 2 about oversized as well![;)]

Don't see no locals hanging off of the side of a truck trying to sell the driver crack as he drives down the street the way that they do in NJ..
