Coded keys

I can't believe the prices I am hearing from the dealers for keys to my new used truck. All have been around $100 for a coded key except one place that said $30 and they program for free.

    What brand vehicle?

    I know Chevrolet's are in the $40 to $60 range, but I see key blanks on ebay that are supposed to be programmable for $8 to $9 but I've never checked it out.

    A key for my son's BMW was only $75....But finding a dealer that could make one was almost impossible! $50 sounds about right for most of the domestics..

    This MAY work on yours, but no guarantees.

    Get an ordinary key cut to fit from home depot, or other cheap place. Tape one if the original keys to the steering column, behind the shroud so it can't be seen. The vehicle will read the coded key taped to it, and you can give duplicates to whoever you want to have one. A lot cheaper than getting a bunch of the coded ones cut. If it doesn't work, you are out $2.00. If it does, you've saved a bunch, depending on how many you needed.

    I don't know the details of how it's done, but I've heard of people permanently installing a key chip somewhere in the system so a chipped key is no longer required.

    I have an 06 Ford 150 that uses the new key with an embedded chip. As a first precaution to loss, the owner's manual states that if you purchase a new un-programmed key you can have it cut anywhere and there is a proceedure to follow USEING BOTH of the factory keys to program the new one. I purchased two new keys off of e-bay, had them cut at Walmart, followed the instructions in my owner's manual and both of them worked just like the factory keys. I believe the keys were around $18 for the pair.

    Car thieves around here all use a large flat screwdriver.

    That is way I changed all of mine to Phillips.
