Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va.
A staffer for freshman Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., was arrested today by Capitol Police in Washington when he tried to pass through security with a bag containing a pistol and ammunition that belonged to the senator.
A statement from Webb's office said that to its knowledge, the incident was an "oversight" by the senator's executive assistant, Phillip Thompson.
But Thompson was arrested and charged by Capitol Police with "Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Unregistered Firearm and Unregistered Ammunition."
Congressional rules bar congressmen and senators, but not staff, from having a gun on federal property.
The senator's office said Thompson "is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the Senator. We are still awaiting facts."
(Story continues below)
Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider issued a statement saying a man entered the Lower Delaware & C Street Door of the Russell Senate Office Building at about 10:50 a.m., and an x-ray machine "revealed he was in possession of a loaded pistol with two additional fully loaded magazines."
"It was determined that he did not have a license to carry a pistol in the District of Columbia," Schneider said. "He was in possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition."
Thompson then was placed under arrest and charged.
The senator was parking his car at the time of the arrest, according to a Senate staffer cited by the Drudge Report.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......thats strange. I didn't think those nasty gun laws applied to Democrats![:0] 0 -
Webb has said that he carries a gun, but will never explain how he does it in DC. This must be how. Typical hypocrite, thinking he is above the law. 0 -
Heee,Heee,Heee, Funny! [:D] Maybe they'll fight this one out in court also as being unconstitutional! I won't hold my breath though. 0 -
To my understanding, and I could be wrong, Webb is not a typical Democrat when it comes to guns. 0 -
..."Unregistered ammo", WTH???...none of my ammo is registered...[;)]

I love how folks jump on the "liberal democrat" without knowing the facts.
Typical knee-jerk response.
James Webb is opposed to gun control.
You know, the opposite of "supports"?0 -

produce some links to show his voting on the issue0 -
newt,
Better yet, you prove he's an anti-gun liberal. Seems to me everyone already knows it, so you should have no problem proving it.0 -
EMM: You're not from VA, are you?
Webb's pro-gun the same way any other Moderate Democrat is pro-gun. Very, very provisionally, and only when the race is tight and he needs to court disenfranchised Republican fence-sitters.
I distinctly recall him using the Circuit Court decision defacto legalizing open carry in VA as a campaign issue in his run against George Allen (a PROVEN supporter of gun rights). He said something to the effect of "I own guns, and I support common-sense gun rights and always have, but there is no common sense in allowing people to run around the streets and businesses of Virginia like Wild Bill Hickok."
It doesn't help that George Allen had a double-digit lead prior to the absolute and utter insanity of the Macaca nightmare.
Like any good Liberal, Jim Webb sent up a silent prayer of thanks, excoriated his rival for his cruelty to whatever undetermined minority group he was viciously attacking (nobody still seems to know), and reaped the voter windfall that squeaked him out the victory.0 -
Webb is a democrat...'nuff said. For you young and dumb, that means he will vote against your rights. I didn't vote for him. Col. North...where are you? 0 -
He was probably planning to assassinate the President. 0 -

You're not from Virginia either, are you? Webb won because Allen was a moron. He insulted a native-born Virginian, and told him, a guy was from northern Virgini, that he wasn't from the "real" Virginia. Well as a life-long NOVA resident, George Allen can kiss my real Virginia a s s. Oh, and by the way, George Allen grew up in southern California.
Allen is a dope who tied his wagon to George Bush. He also decided to completely forget about northern Virginia, the economic heart of the state. When you take a big swipe at about 25% of the state's population and God only knows at how much of its tax base, you're usually going to lose.0 -
This is a letter sent out by Webb to his supporters.

October 30, 2006
Dear Virginia Sportsmen and Gun Owners,
As a long-time member of the National Rifle Association, you can imagine my surprise when I received a mailing in the form of an Orange Card saying "VOTE FREEDOM FIRST ON NOVEMBER 7 - VOTE GEORGE ALLEN FOR THE U.S. SENATE!"
I am writing this letter to make certain that no Virginia sportsmen or gun owner has any question concerning my stand on Second Amendment and sportsmen rights.
To be clear, I value and will defend your right of self-defense. As a Marine combat veteran who shot "double expert" and once taught the .45 pistol to Officer Candidates, and as a former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, I know first hand the importance of armed self-defense by law-abiding citizens as a deterrent to criminals, and in the long term, to would-be tyrants.
I have possessed a concealed-carry permit for many years, and shoot regularly. I have made no secret during this campaign of the fact that I carry. I support a national concealed carry permit. I also will sponsor a bill in the United States Senate that repeals the National Park Gun Ban that disarms only law-abiding citizens in Interior Department/National Park Service across Virginia. And I intend to get it to the floor for a vote.
Please compare this background with that of my opponent. Individual Second Amendment Rights are ingrained into my Scots-Irish culture, and I stand where I stand.
On the sporting side, I support opening up more Federal land for sportsmen. Federal land is, after all, the property of all Americans. In addition, I support air and water quality measures that improve wildlife habitat. I will be monitoring the "Farm Bill" and its wildlife habitat programs to make sure that Virginia and our abundance of National Forest lands gets its fair share of funding for our wildlife programs.
You can also imagine my frustration when I received my NRA magazine and saw there was a question mark beside my grade. Only after complaining to the NRA did they finally post my grade on their website. I got an "A" which was purposefully omitted from the NRA orange card that, to my shock, urged a vote for George Allen. The question is, why did they not mention my own lifetime of support on these issues?
In order to fully clear the air, I am making public my 2006 NRA Candidate Survey. You can find that at www.webbforsenate.com/nrasurvey.pdf I challenge George Allen to do the same. We should have no more secret surveys in Virginia when it comes to our right to keep and bear arms.
Please help me clear up this deliberate distortion by an organization that I must regretfully conclude has more on its agenda than protecting the earned Second Amendment rights of our citizens.
____________________________________________________________
After Webb complained, the NRA did give him an unqualified A. They gave some silly excuses like supporting sitting legislators and on and on. What stupid people don't realize is that Virginia now has some very pro-gun Democrats. If you're stupid and don't read the paper, you don't know this.0 -

To my understanding, and I could be wrong, Webb is not a typical Democrat when it comes to guns.
From a Peggy Noonan article on Webb:
"It is true that Mr. Webb has said he supports the Second Amendment, and much is being made of this. But that doesn't strike me as significant, or rather it strikes me as significant only in what it underscores: The Democratic Party has lost on the right to bear arms. They know it. It's why they don't speak of gun control anymore on the national stage. It used to be one of their primary issues. They went as far as they could in terms of control--licensing, background checks, etc.--but on what was once their obvious desire to make private gun ownership in America illegal, the Democratic Party has, in the past dozen years, quietly, almost soundlessly, caved in."
So basically she is saying that Webb says he supports the 2nd just because he has to, since talking about gun control is bad news for the dems.0 -

I don't care if Allen was from Mars. He lost because of the Macaca nightmare and the poll results show it.
And btw, nobody south of Woodbridge prefers to think of themselves as a Northern Virginian.
If you're seriously trying to tell me you're proud to be from NoVA, that tells me you're either a Salvadorian or a yuppie. Both of which are Democratic lovechildren and are multiplying at a staggering rate. By the time I got there, any native Virginians had already headed South.
The state is going the way of NY vs. NYC and I had no interest in sitting around and watching it happen.0 -
Well, I suppose that would be true if Webb had a long record of supporting gun control, and then suddenly changed. But that's not the case.
Look, you found a nice little article written about Democrats in general which I actually agree with. I'm glad they realize gun control is a bad idea and unconstitutional and a loser with the voters.
At the same time, that's not Webb and never has been. Now, if you want to be wrong and disagree with me, fine. If you want to give a guy who served in Vietnam, won a pile of medals, and who has long supported gun rights, a fair shake, then you can do that. Jim Webb is a friend of gun owners and always has been.0 -

I would very much like to see a source for this, you'll excuse me if I don't take your word for it.
And I find it funny that you would call Webb a "liberal." Jim Webb graduated from the Naval Academy. He fought in Vietnam and was awarded the NAVY CROSS as well as the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. George Allen never put on a uniform a day in his life. Jim Webb was a Republican, a Reagan Conservative. He served in Reagan's cabinet as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs and then as Secretary of the Navy. He resigned as SECNAV because he REFUSED to go along with Frank Carlucci's plan to gut the Navy of ships and men. How many politicians would resign like that, on principle, because they believed in a STONGER military and not a weaker one?
Jim Webb is no liberal. In fact, he's more conservative than most of the current so-called "Republicans" who are more concerned with running up the national debt with irresponsible spending and increasing the size of the government than with protecting your right to own firearms.0 -

You realize that describes Max Cleland, John Kerry, Wesley Clark, and a whole bunch of other super-Libs, with only minor differences in the medals. Your argument does not hold water. Next...

Then why, oh why, oh why, is he a DEMOCRAT, oh wise one?
Based on what you're telling me, he's either:
-precisely what he claims to be, a so-called "Moderate Democrat"
-a Republican who is, for some reason, running a massive campaign masquerading as a Democrat, running as a Democrat, and touting Democratic causes
Perhaps he's doing some double-secret undercover work, eh?
I'm not a Republican. I'm a Libertarian, and I vote as such. I am, however, going to call a spade a spade, regardless of the party.
I have no love for George Allen, and probably would not have even bothered to vote in the election (had I not been in the field, which I was). But one does not go from a 18%-point lead to a dead heat in one week without a political catastrophe of massive proportions.
He lost because of Macaca. Webb and the Liberal DC media knew they were behind and had no cards left to play. They saw a chance to take a non-issue, a non-gaffe, and play the race card to give them the points they needed. It blew up into a racial firestorm. They pulled an OJ, essentially, turning a hopeless situation into a victory. It worked. Hooray. Politics as usual.
Just don't sit there and try and tell me Jim Webb is some kind of boy scout. Even when you throw out the Democrat politics, the race baiting suggests otherwise.0 -
He still knows the law and is no better than you or me. Just because he is a Senator does not mean him or his staff is above the law. 0 -

You're full of @#$#. I'm glad you left and don't come back. If I ever leave my beloved state and see you in some bar somewhere calling yourself a Virginian, I'm punching you right in your wanna-be mouth. You and George Allen and his silly cowboy hat can go take a leap.0 -
Were the charges against Mr. Thompson classed as felonies? If convicted of a felony, he'll never be able to legally own a gun.
By the way, I can't find NOVA on a Virginia map. Is that where English is the second language?0 -
And another thing: The Roanoke (Va.) Times has yet to print this story. However, had Mr. Thompson held a CCW in Virginia, his name and address would have been on the list that the newspaper published on their website a couple of weeks ago.
My opinion? He should have been cited with a misdemeanor and allowed to return the firearm to his locked car. (Where it would probably have been stolen, used in a crime in D.C. and traced back to a gun shop in NOVA, Va. Where the shop owner would be sued by the District of Columbia0 -

You won't have to worry, because I would never stoop so low as to call myself a Northern Virginian, and I've never lived in the rest of VA. I'd have to spend about 3 hours southbound on 95 before I'd find a place I'd willingly live. Even if you factor out the fact that the North will be running the entire state before too long (if it isn't already).
Northern VA is a disgusting cesspit. I lived in 4 different areas of NOVA, 2 in Arlington County and 2 in Fairfax County, and not one was worth the sweat off my asscrack.
Arlington is a Salvadorean ghetto where the illegals are multiplying so quickly (and getting their children thus grandfathered in) the county government has stopped even bothering to pretend to care about the white people. MS-13 is proliferating so fast that even the DC gangs are starting to get worried that they'll end up with a turf war. The crime rate is increasing at an astronomical rate, and has been for several years.
Fairfax is utter urban sprawl awash with yuppies in Lexuses and BMWs who are perfectly content to inflate the real estate prices to where nobody making under $100k a year can afford to live. They turn 395 into a parking lot starting at 2 in the afternoon (what kind of person gets off a 9-5 job at 2???), drive like utter and complete jackasses, voluntarily agree (on everyone's behalf, apparently) to some of the most frivolous taxes on the East Coast (vehicle tax, anybody?) and, most importantly, vote Democrat. In droves.
These are the new Northern Virginians. Like it or leave it. I left it.0 -

NOVA stands for Northern Virginia. The Big Sprawl. DC Jr. Home of the hour and a half 10 mile commute. The New East-Coast Barrio. La Raza del MS-13, putas!0 -
We need a congressional investigation into the matter and a special presecutor to interview everyone under oath. If nothing else we can convict some people on purjury charges. What did they know and when did they know it ? 0
