Shotguns....and long time no talk!!!

Hi everyone!! It has been a long time since I really spent any time on here. I hope all is going well and that conversation has been as spirited as ever. I am sure DWS would never let it get dull...as well as some of you others!!!

I am looking into getting my first shot gun (I know...Police Officer never having a shot gun...keep the jokes coming, I can take it). I have pretty much picked out a shotgun, but am wanting to learn more before I purchase one. I have shot one once in my life and that was two Friday's ago. I enjoyed it so much I am dying to get one now.

I am looking at a Benelli SuperNova from my local Sportsman's Warehouse. What I would like to know is if anyone knows a good website to learn more...terms and definitions, types, styles, what to use on certain hunts, barrel differences, ammunition, etc. Basically I am looking for Shotguns 101. Anyone have any ideas??

Also, those who have shot them...what do you think of the Benelli SuperNova?

    What do you mean "What I would like to know is if anyone knows a good website to learn more"...You are there. Here and "Ask the Experts". A more accumulation of knowledge about guns exists....use it!

    Benelli builds a great gun, a bit pricey, but "ya git whut U pay 4".....Welcome back...

    The Super Black Eagle looks awesome. Other than the fact that it is $1,000 more than the Super Nova. If I like the Nova I might just trade up eventually. I think $399 is enough to spend right now on a shotgun...especially for the first one...which is what the SuperNova costs at Sportsman's Warehouse!

    Although you have me thinking now....

    Check on an 870 wingmaster if you want a pump. Just my opinion.

    Any of Benelli's models will do just fine - sure they're pricy, but it doesn't come any better than that.

    If you want a pumpgun, there's the Supernova as you know.
    There's also the older version, the Nova. They'll both do the job just fine, regardless of what it might be.

    If you're open to suggestions, and don't mind a semiauto - you might want to look into the Super Black Eagle from Benelli also, as allready stated.

    I have the Benelli Super Black Eagle in the "old" version with magazineextencion. It'll hold 7 magnum cartridges or shorter..... or 6 Supermagnum.

    If you want to go both ways - both pump-action and semi-auto in one gun... Benelli has that also. You will be able to switch from pumpaction to semiauto.. or the other way around.. in a flash.

    The Franchi SPAS-12 was the gun that brought that up and looked mean in the process. BUT it was overly complicated and heavy - Benelli makes a pump/semiauto gun that's far more reliable, lighter and much simpler to use.


    If you start out with Benelli, you won't regret it. That's for sure.

    Ok....so after that I think that I am going to stick with a Benelli. I am planning on doing some hunting with it....rabbit, maybe some bird....what length of barrel would be best. The Synthetic SuperNova comes in a 24, 26, or 28 in barrel. I was thinking about the 26" to go in the middle....what do you all think?

    Nova had some ejection problem's, That was a while ago, it may be a fixed problem now. But I suggest that if you plan to shoot anything larger than a 2 3/4 shell to see if you can find one to try out first with 3 or 3 1/2 shells. You may not like the results. Kind of a mule but so is the Black eagle. Beretta 390/391 or winchester SX2 or SX3 much softer shooter's . Depends if you shoot 5 rounds that day or 300 rnds. Anyone can handle a few rounds, but shoot a case of shell's and get back with me on that , if you can raise your arm to type that is[^]

    I can't knock your choice; I just have no experience with a Benelli.

    IMNSHO, the shotgun of choice is the Remington 870.

    I am a big fan of pump shotguns and love my Nova. The mossberg 500 the current 870 don't come close to the Nova. Hurts to say it but it is the truth.

    You won't go wrong if you get the Nova.

    Not sure if it was with the size of shell that was the problem, just remember a few years back reading more than one reveiw that complained of this problem. Yor best bet is to Google this subject and get a average of opinion of different sources. I personally did not have an ejection problem with my Benelli, just did not enjoy the pounding it gave me with a full day of shooting. I sold it a few month's later and a few $ lighter and was surprised that I had a hard time getting rid of it. Seem's Benelli dose not mass the number of follower's like Remington and Winchester. Still if your not shooting large amounts of ammo, go for it. you might even try the Stoger models they are basic Benelli design with cheaper triggers and finishes.
