Best sidearm to carry while deployed?
I'm going to be going over again in a few months but we got it cleared to carry our own personal sidearm. I have a Kimber ultra carry, a springfield XD45 and a 229 SIG but I'm looking at something custom made for carry in iraq. Posibly a desert Kimber custom shop 1911 full size or maybe a Les Baer custom? What are your opinions? Also, I'm an 89D explosive ordnance disposal tech. I'll need something that can go on a holster that can clip to the front of my suit (The suit has a couple pouches perfect to carry 5 or 6 mags so I'm not worried abou that) and also go into a tactical leg holster when I don't have the suit on. That's what has me up in the air right now. Power of a .45 or availability of 9mm rounds. I still don't really think I'll need more than 250 rounds though. We're only going to be there 5-6 months max for this trip. Tell your boy to keep his head down and eyes up and come back home safe 0 -

He's been married for over 3 years and seen his wife 2 months. He says yer full of chet cuz they don't let you pee on's carry anything besides the issue junk.
Prove him wrong. Post us pictures of your selected sidearm with a background in Iraq. We'll know if it's legit.0 -

I like the XD, but if you don't like Glocks for combat, you wont like the XD.
Any good 1911 frame chambered larger than 9mm should do fine. Look at the Special Operations folks you will be working with and see what they are carrying. You will want to carry the same thing. You will most likely find they are all carrying 45 ACP.

I have a custom shop kimber, but it would not be in the top list
in sort of order XD, Glock, USP, sig. I would also choose 9mm, but bring 250 of +P+ ammo

Get a SIG in what ever cal. the enemy is carrying then you can pick up their ammo and kill them with it. a well placed shot may it be a 9mm will still knock there dicks stiff0 -

The Baby Eagle 9mm is the only one I can say that about, good set of controls and great fit. Very Accurate little 9mm that fits great in that front vest holster. Sad to hear that the DMZ is where you get to go to recover from a tour in Iraq these days. Can you get your hands on one of those New "Triple Action" Korean 9mm's???0 -
I'd have to agree with a HK USP series, in either 9mm or .45. I also have a Glock 21, but wouldn't choose it to take over there...
And the USP is 12+1 capacity in .45, 15+1 in 9mm.0 -
Now I've never been in combat or the military (not out of choice), but your original post didn't specifically rule out revolvers. I don't know much of anything about EOD's and what your equipment is, but PATBUZZARD mentioned the possibility of having trouble bringing it back to the States when your deployment is up. If that's the case, do you feel it would not be in your best interest to carry a wheelgun due to lower capacity? If you'd consider a wheelgun, a S&W or Ruger in .45 or .357 might fit the bill and they'd be cheaper than a custom auto in case you couldn't get it back once the tour's over. Both of those cartridges have been proven over decades. 0 -
I would take a 9mm Beretta, same as the military uses. That way you can get extra ammo and mags if you need them for any reason. 0 -
being in the Army I have never heard of that being done. But being special Ops again you might have a choice. If it were me it would be some sort of 45 or 40. I've always heard the reason for not choosing personal firearms is the ammo issue. To me I would stick with a 9mm so ammo ready available and you can can borrow, consolidate ammo whatever it may be. To me if they get that close anyways, your screwed 0 -

For a non-magnum wheel gun, the .45LC has killed many a man. Probably would not be a bad choice. 0 -

75B or 85 Combat would suit you nicely if you're thinking of taking a 9mm.0 -
Before you spend money on anything, you owe it to yorself to handle a Browning Hi-Power. 13+1, same operating system as a 1911A1, and for me, an amazingly perfect fit to my hands. Will also fit in GI .45 holsters, perfectly.
I'm not knocking the other firearms, but if you've never handled one, you are in for a pleasant surprise.
By the way, I don't have a horse in that race - just trying to be as helpful as I can.

No way I'm going with a revolver either. Not enough rounds and takes too long to reload.
I'm thinking about going with the XD45 or getting a HK .45 to go with. I'm bidding on a Kimber custom TLE II right now. Maybe I'll even like that one. I'm not too worried about customs officials since they will be crated and shipped back with all the crew served weapons.

EOD and Tank Retriever guys in my outfit were a special cut of cat
who went into extra dangerous situations. They were all decorated except for a pair who didn't have due respect for transporting decomposed dynamite over corderoy dirt roads.
Some teams didn't move anything but blew it in place.
Ours were left alone. They had jobs nobody wanted, so carrying a personal weapon doesn't surprise me.
The 357 SIG has a flat point but 9mm +P+ (not +P) is about equal to 357 SIG but with round nose. If 357 SIG is available there I'd be partial to that. While they are both flat shooting, the flat point I believe, is more effective than round point.
What power level 9mm is issued over there?
Hirtenberger 9mm +P+ L7A1, 124 gr 6/91 ammo is available here and as I said, it chronographs with the 357SIG. If you could get flat point SWC 9mm +P+ over here, That would be my choice.
Most likely your pistol will have to be free from grease or oil and function in the sandy environment so a tight target grade auto or revolver will likely give you grief once you take it out of a ziplock bag.
The proven Browning P35 should be looked at. It's grip shape has been copied by current pistol makers. They date back to a time when guns worked and didn't jam.
Sights are the easiest but maybe the most important decision. The green, Tritium combination sights with Light Pipes will illuminate the sights against all kinds of backgrounds, giving you fast target acquisition day and night.

I personally would go with a Sig Sauer p226 in 9mm with hi-cap mags. It's a very smooth shooting pistol and is very easy to do follow-up shots if needed. I love mine. 0 -
Even after close to a year of training, some people still aren't quite all there. I love my job though. Iraq was great the first time during OIF 1 when we got calls every day and stayed busy blowing poop up right where is was. Brought everybody home too! 0
