I thought that was an electric choke.

Choke is on the outside of the carb. The mystery part is on the inside.

Yep, you have a feed back carb. It sends info to/recieves info from a computer. You should have an O2 sensor also. Do you have electronic spark advance or is there a vaccuum advance canister on the distributor? If you have electronic spark advance, you would have to go back a couple years on the distributor too and bypass the computer all together.

I did the same thing on my '82 El Camino. I got rid of the Q-jet and put on a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb. I put an aftermarket HEI distributor and new plug wires at the same time. All I did was leave the extra wires unhooked and wrapped the ends with a little tin foil and electrical tape. Everything was mechanical so I didn't have to worry about the vacuum tubes breaking or computer taking a dump on me. The only thing was that the check engine light stayed on because of the unhooked wires, but it was well worth it compared to the performance gains. Here's a website with tons of info for ya.
