Not on the handgun, but something to put on your head quickly to see in the dark and identify IF/WHERE bad guy(s) are inside your dark house....and sight a handgun thru, if a threatening intruder is there.

I have several light switches in my home, that when thrown, turn every light in the house on, except for table lamps. Also floods around the house which can illuminate the grounds.
I've got night vision, but the truth is: Evil fears the light.

If I ever get a home of my own, I'll have full illumination set off by motion detectors. But I'm not there yet.

What is the physical description of the area that you wish to defend ??
Night vision is OK for camping and stuff, as a kinda toy, but just doesn't cut it - especially for under $400 - for a critical, life and death defense of your home.
I suggest that you re-think the actual things that you want to accomplish.

For the most part they're correct. In answer to your question about the cheap night vision monoculars and stuff, I have a Night Owl that I bought at Wally World and it's a toy. It will let you see in total darkness with the infrared illuminator, but there are serious limitations when compared to the real thing. If you have ever used the real thing you won't like it. If you've never used the real thing, they are fun. DO NOT TRY THIS with the commercially available stuff but, driving with the goggles is a real treat. 0 -

Alright guys(Doug), I'll quit thinking that night vision would give me an advantage over intruders into my place who intend me and my family harm. Our area is overrun with desperate illegal aliens from Mexico, who have no skills except taking money and property fron citizens...and it gets notibly worse and more violant with gangs every month.

I may call myself "first_timer", because I'm relatively new to most brands of pistols and want to learn all I can about and use many different types. I also called myself "first_timer" because I'm new to reloading and want to learn and get expert at it.
I qualified Expert in the military with other guns like my favorite M-14 which amazed my insructors and was distinguished as the best shot in my company. I've been around the block many, many times. But my style is lowkey.
I am a card carrying holder of a Concealed Handgun License and have been for a while. I took an extremely rigorous and comprehensive professional training course involving phsychology, conflict resolution(but hours of instruction on how to handle situations where deadly force is unavoidable and justified, learned all the conceal laws of my state and state laws regulation handguns, spend hours at the range with an extremely well known instructor from former Special Ops background and current Homeland Security Agent....qualifying and improving my handgun skills, spent days of classroon instruction and a 2 hr written exam....to get my CHL.
No feeling that you are picking on me is felt here, thanks for your thoughts.0 -

It was with the US Army during the early 60s(yes, I'm an old fart...Ha!)
I'd rather not speak about Where I served during that time, though.
Currently live in Texas. And "CHL" here stands for Concealed Handgun License.
(since all the illegal alien thefts, carjackings and violent crimes rising here...our State Legislature, Governor and other high profile/influence government official are now very pro gun/self defense....and are just now passing new laws about law abiding citizen(not illegals)carrying lock and loaded firearms where ever they want if have a CHL...AND also everyone, except felons and illegals can carry 24/7 locked and loading in there vehicles everywhere in the state. Those bills should be signed by our Governor today, I've been told by the news).

If so, I believe you are very wrong about that with 90% of CHL holders here. And most other holders that I know also.
They just need to study and restudy the deadly force laws backwards and forwards to KNOW what to expect from law enforcement entities and courts, practice, practice, practice frequently and use without hesitation when the state laws are on their side in those situations(as I have and do periodically). People I know here are totally capable of not hesitating when current law is applicable for their protection.

I have one of the Cheap russian night owl hand held scopes (I bought at a Flea Market in Berlin for $60), when combined with my FN 5.7 with laser or IR it is good for target 100-200 yards but is too cumbersome for use when moving or close-quarters. Unless it's just for fun I agree with others don't waste your money on any Gen I night vision stuff (way over priced). Even the expensive "Goggle" sets aren't really that helpful up close. 0 -
...Jim, you don't need to go thru what FT mentioned in his reply to obtain a CHL here; I would guess he "chose" to go that extra mile...or two or three. I'm not knocking that idea, but I don't feel the need for that...practice, proficiency and common sense.
...Not being an LEO, I don't really feel the need for "conflict resolution" myself...I don't think that would be an issue in a 3 second confrontation. My CHL is for me and mine, a third party intervention ain't exactly what comes to mind for me; think I'll leave that to the LEO's, of course there is always the VERY rare exception.
...My last renewal last fall was 4-5hrs(?), written test and the range, 50 rounds at different distances. Intial CHL is like 12 hours of going thru all the tech (law) stuff, written test and range. IF you are fortuanate to have the same instructor each time as I have, it's not TOO boring for those of us fairly copmpetent with a handgun...[;)]0 -

Yes, I wanted the best of the best comprehensive training I could find. And an added benefit was also that the instructor and he has become my friend and mentor and communicate frequently. He is a truly amazing guy. We'll talk in the morning while he is riding his tractor around his field....and a couple hours later when he is in a special meeting with the States Attorney General in his office about Homeland Security.
The conflict resolution were techniques before deadly force happens to be unavoidable. But then he taught us to draw and fire without hesitation(when the situation occurs) in a second or less(and we all practiced that). Believe me, he wasn't trying to get us to give precious time-costing leeway or niceness to a bad guy.0 -

Anyhow i hope the chinese flood the market with some cheap nightvision units equivalent to the generation 3's .Thats so horribly expensive now.Kind of wonder bout the paperwork you have to get through aswell.

My instructor was blunt and quite clear about that(and without a split second of hesitation or second thought)right from the very start of the course.
I really believe That those were the first words out of his mouth, before he got into the law and psychological issues. I think he followed up that first statement with something like....If any of you have Any doubts about being able to do that in a second or less, go home now...or you'll be wasting your money and we'll read about you in the obituaries of the newspaper someday.0 -

I like the feedback on other's opinions here. It's nice to get quick responses as we do on this forum(whatever they are). At least I don't have to wait 4 days for a reply, as with other forums, to get a put down...Ha!
It truly doesn't bother me if people disagree with me. I have pretty thick skin....and those don't bother me. Many times I take their learned advice and change my mind too because of things members reply. I also get lots of heads-up info about things, and sources of info, etc.
Most of the joking is in good nature anyway.
