Made a gun/storage box for the truck
Well, I had a sheet of plywood and some spare time today so I came up with a little project. I'm a college student living off campus in a house that I rent with 3 other guys. I don't have a problem leaving my guns there because I know my roommates real well, but if I leave for a weekend or something I didn't want to leave them there because who knows who'll be there partying and whatnot. Not to mention it's a little more discreet than having a gun case and ammo cans bedhind the seat if I need to run to the mall (shudder) or something.
So, here is what I came up with. It's 48" long x 14" wide x 12" tall. I have a spot for my AR, and room for 4 .50 cal ammo cans. I can also fit a .22, or my 12 ga. Nova if I pop the barrel off.
What besides guns and ammo would be good to put in there?
Right now I have my snowmobiling pack in there, it has a first aid kit, firestarting stuff, small cooking kit, rope, knives, flashlights, a couple bottles of water, energy bars, and some extra gloves, socks and stocking cap. I've also got a toolbox in the back with antifreeze, oil, all sorts of tools, belts, basically anything to fix an on road breakdown.
So, any other ideas are welcome and appreciated.

You do good work! You should try making them boom box enclosures for the younger crowd, you could make alot of money!
And you might want to consider bolting it to the floor for safety reasons.0 -

I'd also make sure that there was plenty of oil on the gun. Keeping a gun in a vehicle compartment or trunk can be a recipe for corrosion. Changes in temperature between peak daytime temps and nighttime temps can cause enough condensation to start rusting a rifle within a matter of days. I'd throw some dessicant bags in that compartment too. 0 -
Very good work. Also, nice shop! Add a cleaning kit, silicone cloth or rag with protectant oil, and tools, for each firearm that you might carry, hearing protectors/ear plugs. Spare change of clothes and shoes (change up for summer and winter). Some "just in case cash" if you can.
My brother keeps about $200 in quarters, in doubled socks, under his truck seat, just in case.[:D]0 -
Thanks for the compliments guys. I already made some changes based on feedback I've received. I turned it around 180* so the hinge is at the front, so I can open it without flipping the seats forward, and also anchored it to the truck using some steel cable and the seatbelt bolts. Since I turned the box, I also moved the gun compartment part of it to the other corner, so it's still on the drivers side front of the box. And lastly, I put a piece of the black carpet over the lock and stuff so it doesn't stick out to someone looking in. 0 -

did you check your state laws to see if it was legal to carry your firearm that way ? 0 -

The fire extinguisher is a very good idea, the streisand, and bolton cd's wouldn't make bad targets I suppose.[;)] 0 -

I second that, alot of states say you need to have the ammunition and firearms seperate. Otherwise I like, maybe put a better lock on it a padlock is a sad excuse in a lot of cases. But duno considering its made out of wood anyhow.
I have been playing with my boltcutters way to much lately "god I hate losing keys" actualy I went and replaced all my padlocks so I didn't have to carry 8 keys now I can just carry 2 with 2 4 piece padlock sets. But its sad how easy it is to cut a padlock
Biggest thing is I would make sure if your going to carry that expensive of a gun in your vehicle that you have insurance that will cover it, only I know of is the NRA insurance nothing else covers in cars I don't think. So if you have a NRA membership your covered for 1k.
I have actualy concidered making something similar for in my SUV but I have a lot less room to work with and no gun I currently want to do it with unless I did it with my ak which would be sweet considering it has a folding stock. However at over 300 bucks + the cost of mags/ammo I hate to put my ak in there "I love it to much" was thinking of buying a little 9mm carbine or 9mm hight cap pistol like a mac-11 or something to that extent.0 -

How long would you be keeping the guns and ammo in this compartment? I'm asking because I have read terrible things about the heat messing with the ammo and guns if kept in a vehicle on a hot day. 0 -
I had 88 boxes of shotgun shells stored in mine this August in 100+ days of heat during the trapshoot in Sparta and had no problems with them. Maybe metallic carts would be bothered, but I doubt it.... 0 -
It would only be in there at most for a couple of days, so I'm not terribly worried about the heat. The ammo I may leave in there, but it's in .50 cal. cans inside of the box so it should be fine I would think. I tried to find some laws in SD about guns in vehicles and came up pretty much blank with stuff that only talked about motorcycles and ORV's. 0 -

Yep, you are ok in SD to carry transport guns and ammo any way you want. Concealed on your body your need a permit for.0 -

Thanks for the confirmation. Here it is all loaded up, some of the stuff is only in there temporarily until I get moved into the house. But right now I've got the rifle, 2 .50 cal ammo cans, cleaning kit, targets, shooting sticks, sling, 5 mags, detachable carry handle for backup sight, backpack full of camping/survival gear, and there's room for a more.
