Korean War Memorial: Seoul, South Korea (Pics)
Here are a bunch of pictures of the War Memorial in Seoul, South Korea. It is located near the Army base there in Seoul. It has the history of war in South Korea dating back to around the 12th Century. There is a lot of stuff about the Korean War too.
Outside there are a bunch of military machines (planes, tanks, troop carriers, etc.) that you walk around (or in). It is a great place to visit if you are ever over there. Plus there is a very nice memorial to all the soldiers who died during the Korean War.

These bronze sculptures are pretty cool. They are located just as you walk into the plaza.

This is the plaza area. They have bleachers set up. I assume they do special functions there.

Some of the things that they have outside to look and and crawl over. [:D]

This sculpture has a pretty cool story behind it. It is about 2 brothers, one in the South Korean Army, one in the North Korean Army. They met on the battlefield during the war. It is on top of a building that has two very cool mosaics in it.

This area is the memorial to the U.S. soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War. If I remember correctly there were around 33,000 of them. Obviously the Koreans had more, but other than them, the next closest country had around 1,000. The names are arranged by state.

Can't believe they've gone from mud huts to skyscrapers in 50 years.
Had it not been for the U.S. not the U.N., it wouldn't have happened. They'd have remained at the level of Mongolia, or Tibet.
They owe America big time not only for saving their collective azzes
but for the educational system and $$$ that enabled them to leapfrog
from feudalism to the 21st century. To their credit, they were able to take the bit and run with it.
I noticed they commemorated the "Chogie bearers" in the statue. They are the Koreans with A-frames who carried incredible loads up incredible grades to mountain tops; all of which were fortified.
ROK soldiers bloused their boots down by their ankles as the North Korean in the statue who should have been shown in a quilted uniform and sneakers. Low bloused boots made more sense especially in the winter but looked sloppy.
While I have nothing but contempt for the place, it nevertheless is one of the few U.S. foreign ventures that turned out successfully.
My issue is with the cost and continued cost 50 years after the fact.
While the memorial is moving, I have no desire to go back.0 -
Those are some amazing pictures. It's nice to know that good deeds do not go forgotten in some parts of the world.
If I'm not mistaken, they invited the Chinese to attend the 50th anniversary of the cease fire, but given what was going on in North Korea at the time, the PRC declined.0 -
