Deer Hunting with Crossbow
what is the logic behind not letting you use a crossbow to hunt deer?
I am fixin to go deer hunting for the first time and I want to use my crossbow.....it seems a sporting way to hunt.
I am "quite proficient" at about 125' with this and I understand that this is an acceptable range for the bow hunters.

All I know is that a crossbow would be a perfect weapon if you wanted to kill someone without making too much of a ruckus. 0 -
In Minnesota DNR changed the regs. for crossbows. In previous years only disabled hunters could use crossbows, This year anybody can use them-during firearms season. 0 -
Anyone with a slight disability and cannot pull a regular bowstring back, can hunt Deer in Vermont with a Crossbow. Gotta get a slip from your Doc. 0 -

IIRC here in MO. a crossbow can be used by the disabled during bow season, or by anyone in rifle season. 0 -
I really wanted to use one when I deer hunted so much down in Georgia. Get a real powerful one, scope it up. I understand they are accurate up to 50 yards. Even with a 30-06, the average range for a shot in central Georgia was 40 yards.
But, according to DNR of Ga, VERBOTEN.

It isn't legal here in NY ether. You can own one, but you can't use them to hunt with. The NY State Bow Hunters are the big push behind preventing this, but it is all smoke & mirrors. They used to say that the Archery season should be a primitive season, and therefor cross bows couldn't be used. The States Sportsmen's Conservation Council replied to this argument with "A crossbow is more primitive them most firearms, and, Compound Bows are less then 60 years old!" That shot the primitive issue down real quick. Then they would counter with it (Archery) is our season, and we worked hard at getting the season passed into law. We don't want the purity of it weakened by allowing such crude instruments that anyone can learn to use be allowed. The Councils' reply to that was that the season belongs to the sportsmen & women of the state, and not just to an elite group of archers. The tool used by the hunter shouldn't be discriminated against, but it is still illegal.

It seems that the best argument is that bow hunters don't want the purity of bow season compromised.
Trust me, I am not trying to start an argument, but the restrictions on crossbows in North Carolina are assanine. I understand not allowing crossbows during bow season, or black powder, those groups have a right to the "purity" of thier sport. But I cannot fathom why not allow crossbow hunting during rifle season. The deer here are like chiggers and every morning I see 3 or 4 deer on the road. so I guess there are plenty of deer.0 -
...A similar debate took place before black powder guns were allowed a seperate, earlier season here.
...The winning opinion was that the black powder hunters were at a "dissadvantage" and needed their own seperate season. I don't think the law makers that allowed the seperate ealier season ever guessed how advanced black powder rifles would become. IMO the black powder should now run concurrent with regular rifle season, not an earlier and seperate season; let the bow hunters have the earlier and seperate season, crossbows whatever.

That isn't the case anymore. Anyone can use a crossbow during any season here in GA now. I guess they have finally wisened up to the fact that with today's bow technology, you really aren't at that much of an advantage with a crossbow.
The effective distance of a crossbow is about 60 yards, the same as it is with my BowTech Tribute. The only advantage is that you don't have to hold back the weight while aiming. But with today's bows have an average let-off of 75% that isn't much of an issue either.0
