Seeking Expertise with Ruger 10/22
I've got a standard $120 Walmart Ruger 10/22 that shoots 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards with CCI CB Longs... it's pissing me off. I would like the rifle to be able to shoot at least 1/4" groups at this distance, or better. What would you suggest I do?
Buy a bolt action rifle? Add a match barrel? Put up a real range and fire better ammo?

First make sure you have a good rest, then try putting a scope on it (if you dont already have one). Make sure the mounts are tight, finally try different kinds of ammo and have someone else shoot if for you to make sure its not you. 0 -
I would try some different ammo. Try the cheep stuff first. 0 -
trigger might be improved, and make it easier to shoot well.
should shoot bettter than that
try some subsonic LR like Remingtons, those shoot about MOA in my 10/22 T
also try high velocity LR, I bet it will have a preference. maybe also float the bbl so that crappy birch stock is not clamped to it
Also, know that many of the "upgrade" bbls people buy and put on are not superior to the factory ones they replace0 -

Got one of the same guns, and I'll put 'em in a 1/2" group at 75 yds. Try a rest, different ammo, or even a scope. 0 -
I forgot to mention... I have a Simmons 4 x 32 scope that is quite good; my vision is 20-10, so even with field sights and the rifle locked in a vice, I'm getting the 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards. (In other words, given what I can hit at much further distances with my other rifles, I don't believe it's me... but of course I welcome all posibilities)

I can get better groups with my Browning Buckmark Pistol at 25 yards.
I would get rid of that inferior Walmart 10/22 seconds and go down to your local gun shop to buy a real Ruger 10/22.[;)][:o)]0 -
Does yours have the barrel band or is yours the carbine model? My 10/22 (carbine, no barrel band) was shooting poor so I tightened the screw near the magazine and it started to shoot fine. Not sure if that is your problem but something to think about. 0 -
make sure all the screws are tight, check, recheck your scope mount, get some federal ammo. my 10-22 gets 1/2 at 75 to 80. your scope could be bad, ive got a simmons from walmarts that was bad, they replaced it. try another scope 0 -
Put a different scope on it first,I have had 2 bad Simmonds scopes,sent both back for replacement.Neither would hold zero. 0 -
I have no idea what 's wrong with it, but i will say the advice so far has been "sage". Mine (built 22yrs. ago)Is a de lux model with a 4-15 Weaver, shoots 3/4" at 100yds.with the crappy wax coated Rem. ammo.That's always been good'nuff for me .I have never tried any of the hi-buk match ammo, but may in the future, just to test my eye.

Yup!...I'll post up tomorrow what all I had to do to make one a shooter...with pic's a'course...Meanwhile...visit a .22 rimfire site...them folk have been 'round the block with Ruger's...[;)]0 -
I also have the standard Ruger 10/22. I put a bushnell 3x9x40 dusk till dawn cheapo scope on it, and it shoot's pretty good. Off a rest, on my own personal range, I can shhot group's the size of a tennis ball at 50 yard's. This is with cheapo Wal Mart ammo to boot. I'm gonna eventually get some of the higher quality ammo, but I'm having fun with what I have for the time being. 0 -

I had a Volquartsen trigger put in mine, got it at a gun show for cheap and the fellow even installed it. Wow. What a difference. It was something like $30, but that was about 10 years ago. 0 -
Here's my 10/22. I converted it to 17mach2, Added new helical fluted barrel, Had the barrel threaded for accessories[;)], Added new trijicon reflex sight, And got a custom stock. Only thing i have left to do is to work on the trigger. Needless to say, I like my plinking[:D] 0 -
I always love the Ruger stories they go something like this-"My 10-22 will shoot a group tighter than a skeeters ass with one type of ammo. I put on a new barrel, new stock, new trigger, new sights/scope, new sling, new cupholder, custom reciever work"
Just buy a Marlin, Browning or any other QUALITY brand rifle.0 -

No!!! The prices of those stocks are outragous if you buy it new.[V]
I found this one on ebay for 1/3 of the price of a new one.[:)]

I completly agree with you. I just wanted a project rifle and the 10/22 fitted the bill. I can customize mine anyway i want to make it my own.
But, when it comes to good, QUALITY, out of the box rifles. You can't beat the brownings.[:)]0 -

I love my 10/22, but I love my CZ 452 MINI-MAUSER more. Another option might me a Winchester 270 pumper. Fun [:D] 0 -
...You can't expect match-like groups with CBs, unless your gun just happens to like them. Nothing that I own will shoot them well. Same goes for the Colibri powderless ammo. It sounds as if you want to keep things on the quiet side. Sorry, but you'll just have to play around with different ammo until you find one that your gun likes.
...I have a Win. '06 that will shoot nothing well except for match quality shorts. Gotta find what works.0 -
Well, thank you all for the great responses. (It's a carbine, by the way.) I checked all of the srews and it turns out the Gun Tight had come loose so I added more and really locked down the screws and let it dry. (Thanks KimberColt and FiveFiveSix!)
I should know in an hour or so if it's the CB CCIs or the scope. I'm hoping it will have at least acceptable accuracy now as I love using these rounds. I just replaced the firing pin (Ruger got it to me in three days... no charge) so at least it eats everything I feed it now.
I would love to modify it to be a real tack driver, but I'm going to save my money for a Springfield M1A. But, any suggestions on the cheap to improve accuracy are always welcome.
