haha, I thought about it, but someone may think the auction is a joke or something. I've already been asked some questions about the "legitimatcy" of the phone. Whether or not it was stolen and so on....
I guess selling stolen phones is a booming business on fleabay. Wish I woulda knew that before the auction so I could have addressed that in the description0 -

Based on your sig, you are a LEO. Therefore, I assume you get first dibs on stolen property that is not claimed and the department sells so that you can actually get some money to fund the things that you need. Lord knows you don't get it otherwise.

No, I don't get first choice at anything. That might sound like a nice perk, but it would be unethical. Actually, up until a few years ago, when the law changed, I couldn't even bid on anything at the city auction. Now, I can, but I am equal to anyone else attending. City surplus auctions can be fun, and you never know what you are going to get, just like a box of chocolates.
Sometimes, property will be stolen, and then recovered, and for whatever reason, the owner doesn't come claim it. After a period of time, and in some cases, after a court judgement, the property is declared abandoned and sold at auction. I have attended the auctions, and have bought items that I know were stolen, recovered and unclaimed.
I bought a box lot of shoes, all new, all Nikes, Reeboks, and the like, and divvied them up amongst the kids. One pair fit me and I still have them. I bought a similar lot of blue jeans, some still with the paint tags on them. Had to take them to J.C. Penney to get the tags removed. One box lot was a group of cell phones, and I sold most of those. Another lot contained the Pearlcorder, which I kept. The Pearlcorder still had the case number written on it in Sharpie pen, in my handwriting.
We don't ever sell guns, but some agencies do, and I have bought guns that have been in police property rooms, that I know were probably stolen, but the owner didn't have the serial number to give to the police when he made the report, so the guns were never entered into NCIC. If you ever see an auction of mine where the serial number is obscured in the picture, that is a gun that came our of a police property room, and I will not display the serial number.0 -

I knew it! However, I do think that you guys should get first dibs. I personally wouldn't consider it unethical. I would consider it just dues for what you guys have to put up with. Kinda like I think that we should get rid of welfare so we could give our soldiers and sailors a big-ol' raise. Then I would be happy to pay taxes!0
