[8D]Yo Handgun, just going thru some Navy Records and I came upon this--

  I know both of the guys in the picture.
  
  My boat was the first of the 688 class subs to be under-ice capable.
  It was called the "Improved Class" i.e. 688-I
  
  The 637 class had fairwater planes (the wings on the sail) that would rotate ninety degrees to allow for surfacing through the ice. The 688 classes fairwater planes would not. As the 637 class boats got older, the Navy had a need for 688 class submarines to fill the missions that 637s were running. So they came up with the 688-I. The took the fairwater planes off and put retractable bow planes (little wings at the front below the water line) on.
  
  That was a fun deployment. We surfaced through the ice a bunch of times. They had a camp set up on the ice. The best part was when the Engineer wrecked one of the camp snowmobiles.[:I]

  [8D]-Handgun, I was fileing some old records of the S6G reactor certs on the SSN 688 (Los Angeles) and I remembered you were on the San Juan so I just wanted to see if you remembered !!
  
  ---nothing but OLD records, here's one of the USS LOS ANGELES (SSN 688)

  --I haven't got TOO many of the LA class or the TRIDENTS/SEAWOLF CL, but a lot of STURGEON CL.I spent most of my time on OE subs and they WERE S5W reactors, but I got hornswagled in on the LA while she was at Mare Island--
