sigma for practice?
So, I start the police academy next year. However, even though I've handled a lot of rifles, my experience with handguns is pretty slim. The academy I'm going to attend uses Glock 17s for training purposes and I wanted to pick one up to practice with prior to entering the academy. However, the Glock 17 is not a cheap gun by any means. So, I thought about buying a S&W Sigma 9mm since they are painfully similar and can be had for 1/2 the price of the Glock. None of the agencies around here use Glocks so buying one certainly would not benefit me after the academy. I'm more interested in becoming familiar with semi-auto pistols more than anything else. And then once I graduate the academy, I can buy a weapon that is on the approved list by the agency that hires me. Good idea? Bad idea? Any suggestions?

...getting training and target time now will help you with the academy training. Find someone who knows more than just a few tidbits of useful information. May want to check for an instructor locally that can get you set up and give you tips to practice, and if nothing else, buy some instructional videos or books.
I have a Sigma for shooting and it works fine. My carry gun is a Glock in .357Sig round.
