Gun shipping question ...Help ASAP
My brother-in-law went to the post office to get information on shipping his long guns from himself here in Idaho to himself in wasilla Alaska, was told at two post offices that it can't be done. and
Help me fellas because I know I ve read somewhere on here that it can, point me in the right direction

I dont know for sure if its mandatory, but you should be able to ship them from an FFL in Idaho to an FFL in Alaska. Hope that helps some. Others will be along shortly who will be able to better advise you on this. Good luck. 0 -

ECC, do you by chance know what the reg#, rule # or what ever it would be so we can make them look at thier own rules? 0 -
He can take it with him on the Airplane and not have to pay the shipping charges.
I have flown to Alaska and carried a rifle in my luggage.0 -
He is driving a U haul and doesn't want the canadian hassle at the border and he has about 10 long guns and a couple of those terrible black style weapons that the canuks frown on going through their country. If he was flying it wouldn't be a problem, just maybe some excess baggage charge 0 -
Or he could go to a different post office and ship golf clubs this time......
OR, he can print out a Post Office shipping label, stick it to the side of the box, wait in line, hand it to the P.O. clerk and leave.

He should go back to the PO in question and have the Post Master contact BATF&E for clarification; the Post Master is not allowed to give legal advise on the shipment of firearms. It is in his manual of operation.
As said earlier, mailing long guns to onesself is quite legal.

From the DMM (Domestic Mail Manual)
quote: 11.3 Rifles and Shotguns
Although unloaded rifles and shotguns not precluded by 11.1.1e and 11.1.2 are mailable, mailers must comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968, Public Law 90-618, 18 USC 921, et seq., and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder, 27 CFR 178, as well as state and local laws. The mailer may be required by the USPS to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the gun is unloaded and not precluded by 11.1.1e.
11.4 Legal Opinions on Mailing Firearms
Postmasters are not authorized to give opinions on the legality of any shipment of rifles or shotguns. Contact the nearest office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for further advice.
11.1.1e has to do with short barreled shotguns.
11.1.2 has to do with handguns.0 -
The BATFE regs state that you can mail a gun from yourself to yourself. Go to www.atf.gov and do a search. You should find it pretty quick. 0
