Anybody here a tractor whizz? I busted the two sector gears in the steering box of my tractor and the repair manual says to re-adjust them after replacement but not how to do it. Any hints? My ride is a MF135.

  I'm not a mf man but my guess would be the adjustment which controls the slack between the gears. There may be an adjustable screw/bolt on the gearbox that can be turned in/out with a locknut to hold it. You want it snug enough to prevent shimmy but not so tight that it binds when turning.

  ITT makes service manuals for small tractors...they can be purchased online or at supply stores like orschelyn or tractor supply, etc...got one for brothers MF165..think company was out of kansas city

  Sounds right to me, assuming it is manual steering. Typically, the output shaft has a gear that's teeth are tapered. On the other side of the gearbox from the shaft there should be a bolt or screw and the lock but. As you tighten the nut, there is less free play between the gears. Tighten it too much and it's tough to turn. Compromise between too much freeplay in the steering and stiff steering. Some brands hide the screw inside an extra long lock nut and place a rubber grommet in the hole.
  
  High end lawn mowers Cub Cadets and John Deere's have used similar systems on their older lawn mowers. Suspect the newer mowers have been cheapened up.

  Great place. Helped steer me in the right direction a couple of times. JD hydraulics are complex.
