Surround sound
Planning on doing some upgrading on our TV sound system. Have had a Technics 100w amp for some time now but have used only stereo setup---1 floor speaker on each side of the entertainment center. I've kinda narrowed down my speaker brand to Polk for the surround sound setup.
Any of you have a surround sound setup and how do you like it?

set the big screen up on friday, right after the movers left.
today went to wally world and got a dvd/surround sound home theater set up.
prices have really come down since last time i bought one 8 yrs ago.
only negative is the rear surround speakers only have 15 feet of wire and have a plug for the dvd factory wired.
will have to splice in additional wire to get the speakers where they belong.
will i loose any performance from the system if i lengthen the wires by 10 feet?

I have a SonyES 3000 reciever 7 channel with all Polk voice matched speakers. In ceiling for center, dipole for rear RTi10 for fronts, CSi5 for center, Polk Sub. Sounds awesome!
I could use another subwoofer though!0 -
We decided against Surround Sound and wenth with a setup similiar to what you currently have. The room is 22X26 with a catherdral ceiling and the TV is in the corner. Sound was just dying in the room. What people were telling me, is surround sound works best in a square situation. Supposedly it wouldn't work in our situation.
Yahmaha reciever and SOny speakers. They play nice together.0 -
I have a Panasonic surround sound and it is incredible. It was only like $279 at WalMart. It has an FM/AM tuner, CD player, DVD player and SS all built into one unit. The sound is unbeleivable for such small speakers. It has 6 total. It is really nice when watching movies. I highly reccomend Panasonic. Here is a tip. Most SS systems run hot. I put mine on small 2" rubber legs for ventilation. some have a small cooling fan. Make sure you place the speakers all around the room for maximum SS effect. 0 -
I've got a 1200 watt Kenwood setup (It's all I could afford after I bought the house) and I love it. Only drawback is that the room is almost too big for it, and I either need a second sub, or I need to move the sub to the back of the room. 0 -

No Bose...all paper cones in their speakers. Go to any store like Tweeter, HiFi House or other performance home stereo store. They will blow the socks off anything you can get at BestBuy, CircuitCity, etc. Although, they will be fine to use. They are just a level below high end stuff. 0 -

The Yamaha 5650 suround sound system was the best deal for the dollar,that we found, and the sound is fantastic. But if I had the money I'd buy Bose. Go to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, etc and sit in their sound rooms. Switch all the systems on and off to compare. Then let your ears, wallet, and wife decide what to you should buy 0 -

ONKYO 1000W 7 Channel Surround sys., 2 KLIPSCH subs w/5 POLK Sattalites. RUMBLES pretty damn good. Makes the movies come 2 life.[:p]

I have a pretty good surround system.
A Sony 7.1 channel Surround Reciever at 110w/ch pushing
2 Front Infinity Primus 360 Towers
2 Rear Infinity Primus 250 Towers
1 Center Infinty Primus C250
2 Infinity Primus PS12 Subs with 300W each.
It will shake the house to say the least. My neighbor 1/4 mile away can hear it if I turn it up.
But, I plan on upgrading the center to a Infinity Primus C350, add another set of 360 towers in the rear and two more PS12 subs.

powered by an onkyo tx svx717-pro, onkyo 504, onkyo is one of the only home stereos that are 2ohm stable with thd of .008, only thing better would be mcintosh, but your looking at 10,000 bucks for a receiver
needless to say you can't sit in the same room, and turn it up past 50%0 -

A surround system is best for movies and musical performances actually recorded in one of the 5.1 or 7.1 formats. In my opinion there is really no need to spend the additional money for 7.1 (speakers and amplifier) as 5.1 will provide optimum sound for most programming. Once you decide on either a 5.1 or 7.1 system you really need to answer two questions honestly; 1) how good is your hearing and 2) how much money can you afford to spend? If your hearing is no longer excellent or you are on a budget there is no reason to consider higher end components such as B&K, Krell, or Mark Levinson and you should probably stick with Sony, etc for processing and power. B&K is somewhat entry level high end, but can still run you $5000 and up for a processor and amplifier depending on the combination you select. Speakers are all over the technology and price spectrum as well and you really shouldn't select a speaker because of a suggestion, advertisement, or price. You can use this as a starting point, but it is all about how they sound to you. I've always liked the sound of Klipsch speakers for both my Stereo and Surround Systems, but they are not for everyone. Make sure when you buy speakers you can take them back if they do not sound good in your particular application. Remember, they will sound different in your home with your equipment and room acoustics than they did in the showroom with their equipment and room acoustics.
Buy as much amplifier power as you can afford and remember, power is not about "loud", power is about "musical accuracy"! Also, if you spend a couple of thousand or more on a sound system don't turn around and use $1 interconnect cables. A pair of entry level high end 1 meter analog interconnect cables or a digital (optical or coax) interconnect cable can easily cost you $200 and up and depending on the connected components you will need several of these.
