Anyone else partial to the 16 GA?

For some reason Ive always felt that it closed a big gap between the 12GA and the 20GA. Shells became scarce here for them about 8yrs ago but seem to be every where now. I have an old Topper single I love to rabbit hunt with. I met a guy who knows his stuff about shotguns, he was showing and telling me about calibers Ive never heard of. Do you have an old single nothing fancy that has to be used now and then instead of the modern ones?

    i have a 12 pump, a 16 double and a 20 bolt...
    the double gets the most exercise!

    I prefer the 16 Gauge. My two shotguns are both 16 Gauge Field Grade Winchester Model 12's; a 28" Full Choke made in 1940 and a 26" Modified Choke made in 1941.

    It is a great shotgun for upland game. I prefer the 16 to a 12.

    When using Lead or similar shot, "square" loads have the best ballistics. Square for a 16 ga is 1 oz.; for a 12 ga is about 1 1/4 oz. As it turns out, for waterfowl the 1 1/4 oz load works best (surprise surprise) and for upland birds, a 1 oz load works best- which means that if you're after Pheasants and such, the 16 will be the best choice. That is probably why my Model 21 16 ga is my prefered choice for upland birds.

    Your other comment- I have a Model 37 in 16 ga that also get use now and then, more then than now, and more by someone else than me- I can only shoot once gun at a time.

    I have a nice mossburg 16 ga, I prefer to shoot it over the 12 ga

    I have a Browning "Sweet 16" given to me by a dear friend. Came from the factory with a Cutts Compensator. Son has claimed it as "his." It is a sweet shooting gun!

    Well , never really been overly partial to the 16 gauge , but I do like the old stevens 5100 (SxS) in 16 that I own , Im more of a 20 gauge man as a shooter ???

    I have a Stevens 5100 16ga that has killed a ton of ducks, geese, rabbits, coyotes, foxes, rough grouse, pine hens, doves.I tried through my life to replace it with Win 101, Beretta 391, and a couple other that I can't remember cause they didnt stay in the house long, only competition it has is a beater truck gun 870 12 and a Win model 12 16.
    I think it's the 30.06 of shotgun bores, pretty damn versatile

    I like em to, just have to be differnt I guess. Old Browning 16 with a Belgium slug barrel is what I use for deer unless I'm using the Ruger 41 mag Blackhawk revolver. My bird gun is double stevens 5100.

    Course I have about 25 others around here, just have a few favorites to shoot.

    Same here. The only 16 ga that I own. Probably sees more use than any of my other scatterguns.

    i had repeat, had a 16ga stevens sbs. every time i shot it the f.a. would fly off. gun would recoil up and id have a f.a. in my hand!

    i shoot skeet with a m12 in 16ga.

    I have about 5= Stevens 5100 sxs,Stevens 94c, 94b, 107b all single shot. I also have a model 58d bolt action. I like the Gauge fairly well, though i do have to find the low brass shells so they eject better, since they are older guns.

    Just kidding, I've never even fired a 16 gauge, but I would bet it is like, somewhere between a 12 and a 20.

    So, I believe that I would like a 16 half as much as a 12 but twice as much as a 20.

    Interesting logic, but yet can you shoot a deer slug from a 20? I don't know. I'm just asking.



    Here's to the 16 gauge, the unsung, often neglected shell. It's not the red headed step child.
