Hippies in retrospect
The " Look I what I found old Hippies" thread has given me cause for reflection.
I was once a "hippie". And while I will admit that I had very good time. In retrospect I am thouroughly ashamed of ever having been apart of that "movement".
I consider it perhaps one of, if not THE most damaging occurances to our Nation in it's history.
Looking back I see that Abby Hoffman and his kind of "leaders" were nothing but scum sucking socialist opportunists. Who fostered the ACLU/Clinton/Gore/Kerry type of Anti U.S. socialist political leaders we have today.
Not that ALL the idea's were bad.
But after the debacles at Haight Ashbury and Altamont, in conjunction w/the Manson murders proved our visions of Eutophia were bogus. How quicky the Hippies sold out and bacame WORSE than those they opposed.
If I had it to do all over again, I think I would've been a REDNECK.

hippies had the right idea, but sin and a godless pursuits caused it to fail. they attempted community without a moral basis. they allowed hedonistic pursuits to interfere with righteous goals. many hippies worked as hard if not harder than Quakers and Amish, but the Amish had GOD as the root foundation. you cant work GODS LAND without GOD helping you. any farmer will attest to that.
going back to the earth is fine, but any farmer will tell you that the earth is not something to mess with. the earth like the sea, is less forgiving to those that should error. it tasks a lot of blood and sweat to make the earth produce and to live off of it.
sadly, the most successful hippies were the RICH ONES who could take time off for 3 day dope-fests and communal sweat bathes. the hard working class that fell for the lure, gave up the things that supported them and their families, and they were consumed into a way of life that gave very little back. when the dope and money ran out, they turned to illegal acts to try in maintain it, causing the rift between the law abiding and the lawless that still exists to this day. many of today's problems are still rooted from the hippie movement. contrary to the belief, life doesn't have free rides.
on the other hand, the single most important thing hippies did was to open the eyes of Americans to the fact that there were alternatives to living. normal and abnormal still produced peace and freedom. it just got out of hand when people started doing what they pleased without boundaries. everyone needs boundaries. period.0 -

I was an idealist back when; a simple man that cared for his neighbors, shared the bounty of lifes' fullness, hoped for a brighter and more FREE future, and I lived at Morningstar-a communal living center outside of Placitas, and just down the road from another communal arrangement called, The Hog Farm.
I spent almost 3 years at Morningstar, helping, sharing, making ends meet and teaching about our common bonds of Government, Humanity and Commerce, when the County Assessor demanded payment of the property taxes for the land.
That's when I learned a valuable lesson about Authority and the power to TAX your lifestyle into oblivion.
Contrary to the supposed stereotypical drug-addled mob of unkempt, smelly, broke longhairs; Morningstar was a progressive site, we made things and sold them at a profit to pay our way. There were no LSD parties, no free love orgies, no whacked-out grass farmers planting explosives around their crops; we had it all and the County stole it from us.
They wanted $4,000 per year for property taxes from EACH "FAMILY" living on the land, and there was no way we could pony up that kind of bribe.
We started a construction company to help raise cash.
We got landscaping jobs, we poured concrete foundations for adobe houses, we did roofing, we did paving, we laid brick, block, and adobes, we did plumbing and pipefitting for our utilities.
To no avail. The County wanted permits, and fees, and more taxes, and then the Feds got involved, and wanted tax moneys as well!
Morningstar failed due to the crushing weight of our benevolent government, bent on destroying ALL communal arrangements, and trying to pay for that governmental benificence cost us the most "home" most of us ever had.
So believe the hype, listen to apocryphal anecdotes second-hand, and forget that there were successes: it's just easier that way.0 -

The commune had multiple families, all working and producing marketable items or as construction contractors.
And you believed that you were not required to obtain permits or pay taxes like everyone else?
I'm no tax code expert, (nor am I a fan of it) but even tho you didn't hold "regular jobs" working for "the man", you were obviously making income. Which I imagine the Govt. classed you as "self employed".
My wife is a self employed Dog Groomer. Still has to pay taxes tho. Even tho they aren't dedeucted from her pay like mine are, Ole Uncle Sam still expects his share.0 -
You weren't hippies, you were a bunch of anarchist low-life's who wanted all of the benefits society provided (You used the roads) and did not want to pay your share of the burden.

Agree or disagree, they existed. The decades from 1960-1990 were shaped and led by them - and where it wasn't led it was poked and prodded and dragged. The drop out generation got it right a lot of the time and musically - whoa - check out some of the greats are listed among them. Bill Gates and Steve Wozniak, self proclaimed products from the beat generation are there, too.
I was never a genuine hippie because dropping out for me would have been a (literal) death knell for what I wanted to accomplish but I do recognize how their influence changed - for better and for worse - America, as we knew it, and as we now know it.
The big business stranglehold that is bringing our nation down today I seriously doubt can be called a 'beat counter revolution' ... I don't see many ex-hippies there ... but then again, maybe their parents, aunts and uncles were ... it'd make an interesting study.
I've noticed a lot of home schooler advocates here - guess where that idea came from and who eventually legislated nationwide in it's inception?
I'm curious, let's name some famous redneck movers and shakers from the last 40 years - there has to be a boatload of'em out there. Except for the Grand Ole Opry and Dolly Parton in the music department ... still thinkin' ... .

Young people are often idealistic and stupid. The ideas portrayed by the left on the surface look palatable and utopian. Take the word "communism" out of definitions of the word and it even looks good. Global health care sounds great until you realize that the devil is in the details.
It is only when you are older, more experienced and able to think beyond the cover of a book that you develop common sense.
Most people evolve out of the moronic idealistic stage. Those who don't become art or history teachers. [:D]0 -

Don't most home school advocates want to get away from the Liberal/socialists/anti U.S. revisionist teachings that are so previlent in our public schools?
Baby boomer Movers & shakers with a "screw everyone, ME FIRST" attitude are why we have industry going overseas, illegal immigration and ambulasnce chasing lawyers. And huge Corporations imploding, while upper management gets rich off the investors and employee benefit funds.
Yeah, they've been great for our country.

Not following. The current education "system" is the one THEY'VE built. It bears little resemblence to the one I attended. Most Home school advocates would happily send their children to schools w/1960's attitudes towards education, patriotism and Christianity.0 -

Interesting take - I've got a wife who's been in education for 30 years - and I'm not sure I agree with you that 'they' are responsible for how our school systems have fallen as low as they have. Possibly, but most changes I've noted are generated by those who didn't drop out and could not be called 'counter revolutionaries' ... maybe it's just us. Most have been generated by local school boards (don't we vote those folks in?) and state curriculum 'experts' .. and that's us.0 -
The "homeschool" movement even back in the 70's was generally composed of fundamentalist Christians. The hippies may have kept their kids out of the schools, but they weren't homeschooling them, they were just not schooled. If your wife has been a public school teacher for the last 30 years, then you must realize that the current state of eduacation is a quagmire created by the leftist/"new age" movement started by those hippies/leftists. It's Godless and multicultural with moral reletivism. 0 -
Frankly, the 60's were an embarrassment on all sides; the errant idealism of the Hippie movement was no more or less embarrassing than the errant idealism of the war, nor any more or less a cliche. After six years in the Marine Corps and two tours in Vietnam, I went from wearing the uniform of one mindless army to the uniform of the other. And that was all it was: A friggin' uniform that spoke not one iota of the person underneath except to members of the opposing armies. Pathetic. 0 -

You got it backwards on the home schooling thing. Home schooling was invented to prevent your kids from being taught by EX-HIPPIES!
I grew up just a few blocks away from the Haight-Ashbury District in S.F., when all that was going on. I am SO GLAD all those flea-bitten stinky wierdos either died from overdoses or went back home to their rich parents back east. The few who survived the 60s now run our schools, libraries, and the U.S. Congress. I pee on them all.0
