Christmas in San Diego

As I recently posted we flew out of DFW on Monday headed for San Diego to spend Christmas with our daughter. We arrived safely and as I expected, upon our arrival our daughter and her boyfriend announced their engagement. The date for the wedding has not been set, but it will probably be this spring or early summer. It was a nice Christmas present and I guess we will be heading back this way again in the near future. We will meet his family on Christmas day.

For our stay here we rented a condo in downtown San Diego next to PETCO Park. The roof of the building overlooks the park and has bleacher seating so you can watch the Padres play during baseball season. It also has a great view of downtown, the harbor, and Coronado.

This is our first trip back to San Diego since retiring and moving to Texas early last year. We are enjoying spending time with our daughter and her fianc?e as well as the great meals and music in the Gas Lamp District and Little Italy. On Saturday we are going aboard the Midway (CVA-41), which is now San Diego's Aircraft Carrier Museum. This will be my third visit aboard the Midway since it was converted to a museum. They keep opening up more areas of the old ship and hopefully some day they will open up our old Ready Room from when I was in VAW-115.

My wife and I will also get to attend her former bosses Christmas Party Saturday night and on Sunday we will attend services at North Coast Church in Vista where we were members for many years and also get to see and visit with some of our friends from church.

    I grew up in Pacific Beach and Crown Point area and still have family out there. Merry Xmas and enjoy your time out there Old-Colts [:)]

    We had another enjoyable visit aboard the Midway! Our daughter has gone on board with us the last two times and it amazes me how much interest she takes in what I did back when I was flying off the Midway. However, since she is a nurse I think what interested her most was Sickbay! She laughed when I told her about the long lines that formed going down to Sickbay every time we would leave from a Subic Bay in port period.[:D]

    This visit was a little less emotional than the last time I went on board. The last time I met and had a long talk with an F-4 pilot that was shot down at the beginning of our 1972-73 cruise and was a POW until they were all released. I believe we were supporting the mission when he went down.
