Pistol Caliber Carbines ... .

What is the appeal of pistol caliber carbines? I've got a couple myself!

However I realized that I don't even know what the advantage is of
doing this. What are the main reasons for people buying these? I
know one reason is so they can use it at an indoor range, but
what are some of your other reasons?

    I have a Marlin Camp 9 and a S&W 669. They make a good combo since they use the same ammo and magazines.

    Very good for "urban" situations and only having to stock one caliber for 2 guns.

    I like them because my kids can have the fun of shooting a centerfire long gun and it won't put me in the poorhouse.

    I have pistol caliber carbines in levers, bolt actons, semi-auto and contender carbines.

    I keep hoping Ruger will come out with more bolt-action rifles in pistol calibers. I would love a 357 Maximum one because you could shoot those plus 357 mags and 38 specials. I wouldn't even care if it were a single shot bolt. Like maybe bring back the Ruger #3 or a less expensive version of the Ruger #1 in the same caliber.

    I think they would sell like hotcakes.

    I liked the PC 9 and PC40 series guns too. But they were kind of pricey so you didn't see them on the used market too often. (so you couldn't buy them used, cheaply) If I have to spend $450 to $500 on a plinking gun, I usually can find other guns I want more for that kind of money.

    Pistol ammo is usually readily available and cheap.

    In general its less powerful than rifle ammo which can be an advantage in populated areas because of lower range and risk of overpenetration.

    Biggest advantage is the ability to use the same ammo in pistol and rifle.

    I love my Ruger 44 carbine, so does my wife. Plenty of oomph on the target, light weight, but almost no recoil...


    Now that I have a 1911 I'd trade it for a Camp 45 but my wife would probably kill me...

    I have a Ruger Deerslayer 44mag and i love it. Good brush gun at 100 yards. my 2 cents [8D]

    Will they allow the older 38-55 and 32, 35 etc. Or is it just the pistol cal. Like 45LC, 44-40, 44 mag, etc.

    Well those will get you out there 100-150 yds and will work fine in the woods. Long shots you will have to hold the gun up six or seven feet to get out to 300 yards![8D]

    I can see them for target shooting or plinking (though a .22 is even cheaper to shoot for that sort of thing), but I really cannot see hunting much with them. Maybe for those little bitty whittails back east.[}:)]

    I've had a hole in my collection for the longest time for a .357 lever action rifle and a Ruger .44 Auto Carbine

    This is the first I've heard of any specification on action type - I thought any rifle chambered in the appropriate straight-wall cartridge will be allowed.

    I don't really think it has a purpose, but I have a 9mm AR that is fun, fun, fun to shoot. And cheap too.

    I have an AR 9mm and it is fast to shoot and has less muzzle rise than a standard 223. Especially on full auto (I have a buddy that is a class III dealer). They are a bunch of fun. I have got a few jack rabbits with it.

    That was what I thought about the .357 max before I bought a barrel in that caliber for my Thompson Contender. It will work but the accuracy is terrible. I assume it is due to the rate of twist being designed for the .357 maximum or maybe just the freebore.

    ...I like the idea of carrying a rifle and a handgun that uses the same cartridge. A Lever gun in .45lc just maybe my favorite handgun cartridge rifle...[;)]

    I splattered a possum this morning with my new colt ar 9 carbine. 9mm fmj's still make a good size hole . It didn't wiggle very much after I shot it once. Came inside with a big grin and told the wife I had a good critter gun.. ( like I needed any more )[:)]

    I'm not for certain, but I think once its in a cartridge it doesn't work under "black powder rules".

    A 1st generation Colt Single Action Army (either 38-40 or 44-40) along with a Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine in the same caliber! Just plain fun to shoot and they take you back to another place and time.[:)]
