Are prices really that much higher everywhere but the Houston area or do people not comparison shop? The majority of the reserve auctions I see on this site have reserve prices set higher than the price I'd pay for the same thing new! Are some people actually paying these prices or is nobody really selling anything?! 0 -
I'm new here so please pardon me if this has been covered but I can't stand it any longer.
I don't mean to cast aspersions (sp?) on anyone but when I see some of the outrageous prices and 98% condition (when it obviously ain't) with no box, no papers, after market grips, etc., etc., I just want to scream!
I saw a gun that was supposed to be a Colt Custom Shop gun. I contacted Colt and was told that it probably wasn't a Custom Shop gun, altho it had grips with the Custom Shop medallions.
So, why are we willing to pay 3 or 4 hunnerd dollars more than blue book value just because Colt only made a gun for one year? And because we do pay these inflated prices, it just encourages folks to continue jacking the prices up.
What's up with that?

Who is "we", you with a turd in your pocket? If "we" don't like the prices, then "we" shouldn't buy the item. Its about as simple as this, If someone wants a particular item bad enough they will pay the price for it. Some items that people want may not be available in their area ie. a high value older colt revolver, or in my example a Dan wesson 44mag with a 8" barrel. I have been watching the auctions for several months for the "right" one, I have bid on several but I have a certain price I'm willing to spend. If I don't make it to the reserve OH well. And yes, you are not the first to bring this issue up, and probably won't be the last. It really isn't that big of deal. DON'T BID IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PRICE.0 -

Bid or not, as suits your needs and judgement.
Gunbroker is a fun place. Those who price their goods too high don't sell them. It's just that simple.
You will find a number of sellers who actually want to sell their wares. You will learn their user names, and you will learn to search (Smart Search) for those user names. Saves time digging through the retail plus stuff.0 -
It would be better to ban the reserve auctions. Make the sellers have a starting bid the minimum they will take.

No need to ban anything. It's real simple, people, with the Autobid feature. You see an item you like. It has a reserve. BID THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT. If you did not meet the reserve, you will be quickly notified, and can move on.
If you believe a gun is being materially misrepresented, notify the site owners through the HELP function. In truth, if a gun is misrepresented, that is an issue between the seller and the buyer, no one else.
If you are trying to make a living buying and selling guns according to "Blue Book" prices, be prepared to starve to death. That Blue Book comes in handy as a reference for numbers and years of manufacture, or ID for a particular gun, but the values shown are a source of much mirth and derision.0 -
Welcome to the forums and welcome to the world of "I've got something to sell"; where sellers are sometimes deceptive, sometimes are simply ignorant, and sometimes motivated by greed. When it comes to rare, hard to find, or pristine collectible firearms, a collector may be willing to pay more than a gun is worth so they can fill a hole in a collection. It's simple, ignore it or go for it, your choice and yours alone! 0
