Just scored a bolt action .243, never had one before. Anyone that has one, what's your preferred ammunition?

Would a .243 round be good for deer, and turkey? What other game is this round capable of, and at about what distance? What are your personal experiences with it? 0 -

I would take something bigger if that is the hunt I planned on. If I was hunting deer and had a license then came across one of those animals I MAY take the shot. I would have to be VERY sure of my shot though.

Yes, but I would be more comfortable with something in .30 caliber...btw, I used a .243 to elk hunt this year and while I did not get a shot, I would not have hesitated to shoot one out to 200 yards with it. 0 -
Caribou, no problem. Relaxed moose, neck shot at 200 yards or less-OR- heart shot at 150 or less with PREMIMUM bullets. Elk? not sure never shot one. 0 -

I will agree with the rest.
The bullet holds the energy required, but you don't have the sectional density of a 7mm or 30 caliber. Thus, the 6mm lacks the "punch". However, with quality (Barnes TSX, Swift Sirocco, or Nosler Partition) bullets, it should suffice.
I'd prefer to have someone backing me up with a 30-06 or 300 WinMag though.0 -

If it doesnt have the BOSS set up on it thats a great price for the gun. I had one in 7MM with the BOSS on it and never could get the gun to shoot descent groups. 0 -

A .22 can kill a deer. But that don't mean its ethical. Get at least a 30.06, then you can shoot a very wide range of bullet weights. From 110 - 300+ grain. Just my .02 0 -

Here in Arizona I know a ranger that culls elk with a .243 - elk are not tough - anything in the boiler room does it. we kill elk with pointy sticks, muzzleloaders, 243's and hand guns - yes hand guns. Don't you think your 243 is as good as a hand gun? you don't need a canon for an elk. As for range -- it's very easy to get 50yds from an elk - I have walked right through the middle of a heard of 50 - in season with a rifle. 0 -

For Elk...300-400 yards, depending on the eqipment, ammo, and the user. All of the things listed being topshelf, you could go a little farther.0 -
It is very possible for a 243 to kill an Elk, Moose and Caribou.
But why wouldn't you use a better suited caliber that will do the job ten times better.
There is no competition on how small of a caliber one can take a large game animal so just use a gun and caliber that will do the job efficiently.0 -

The Marine Corp used the 30/06 for a sniper rifle so if you are able it will do it's job a long way out0 -
I am a huge fan of the .308 family of cartridges, and have a 7-08 for elk and big deer. That is a bit on the light side, and requires "zen hunting:" get close, and place the shot carefully. The .243 is a great cartridge, but is too weenie for big critters. Dead is dead, of course, but I'd look for more bullet weight.
If you want to stick with that family of cartridges, the .308 or .338 Federal would be far more appropriate. If you are planning a hunting trip for such game, and only have a .243 to take along, I would beg or borrow something with more thump to it. The .243 is a great low-end choice for someone who plans to have more than one hunting rifle.0
