High end air rifles?
The "next gun" thread got me to thinking about another one and for quite some time I've considered getting a sporter type (as in not one of the free style target rifles) pellet rifle that would have sufficient snap to drop a grey squirrel at about 20 yards. Are there such things? Are there pellets for either .177 or .22 that would work better than others for hunting performance?

I've heard that the high-end pellet rifles are usually better (in terms of accuracy) than the .22 rifles out to 100 yards.
I have a hard time believing you couldn't kill a squirrel at 20 yards with a good air rifle, but I can't talk from experience.

I've got one that I have not tested the accuracy on that much yet, but it will put a pellet through a 1/4" plywood at 20 yards if loaded with pointed hunting pellets.
And it was a cheepo, I only paid $20 for it from one of those traveling tool sales.
I was going to mount a little 4x scope on it one of these days.0 -
Go to www.pyramydair.com and you will find virtually everything available for airgunners. I'm sure there is some very exotic and esoteric stuff that they don't carry but for 98% of the airguner's needs, they have it, plus a pretty knowledgable staff. Currently I'm saving to purchase a Condor precharged. This shoots a .22 cal. pellet at an advertized velocity of 1200+ fps. However the power is adjustable so it can be used for "plinkin and dinkin" with many shots from a charge, then adjusted up for more serious use. Of course there is more to it than just twisting the power knob, but the option is there and unlike a lot of high velocity barrel break guns, you don't have to be an an NFL lineman to cock it. 0 -
I've got a Marksman 55 with a RWS 2x7 scope that will drill the same hole at 30 feet. I kill red squirrels with it all the time at 15 to 20 yards with head shots. 0 -
I have an Air Arms TX200 Mk3. It is equipped with a hi-power variable Swift scope. I won't tell you what it cost, but I was going through a phase at that time.[;)][:I]
It is put together better than most of my cartridge rifles as to fit, finish and ergonomics. Heavy, full stocked, full size, serious air rifle.
Accuracy with certain pellets is nothing short of phenomenal.0 -

I've got 2 of those chinese air rifles. They are very accurate and powerful.
A word of advice get r done make sure you get a scope for the springer air rifle. I put a regular 22 scope on mine first and it lasted about 20 shots. They are fun to shoot in my basement. Never shot any game with them. So can't tell you how deadly they are. I think they would have no trouble on squarrels and rabbits. My friend shoots crows with his and also a cat.0 -
you can kill a squrriel @ 50 yds with a .20 or .22 cal
I prefer the .20 (higher bc)

I shoot a Pardini pistol,very effective drive by gun for those Striped gophers in NW. IA.Accuracy is key.You won't harvest a squirrel without an eye shot so velocity means squat if you can't put it in their eye.You may hit them but they'lle run off wounded.Spend the money and buy something Olympic class in accuracy and you will be very pleased with the results.You will appreciate the quietness of the hunting experience as well,you'lle find you get more shooting by making little to no noise and alerting the rest of the environment.Enjoy;ST 0 -

I reciently purchased from wallyworld 177 G1 Extreme 129.95, advertised to shoot 1000 fps.Shoots great groups in my cellar at ten yards.Killed a tree rat at 35 yds one shot to the head.I used gold raptors for the kill, but since have found they dont group well in high powered springers (to light).Would I buy this gun again? well, to be sure I might look around first and spend a little more, to be sure purchase a wooden stock.

I have used a Sheridan 5 mm for about 30 years and it is a very effective killer on squirrels and cotton tails. Had to quit shooting at cats unless I wanted to kill them. My gun is accurate out to about 30 yards and I just use a cheap varible 22 scope with dovetail mounts.
Now that I live out in the country it is more fun to shoot the squirrels with 22 or 32 H&R Mag. pistols.0 -

I have several air rifles but the best is a RWS 45 in .177 that I bought 25 years ago.I have killed loads of squirrels with it.I killed a big stray dog with it when it threatened one of my kids.I was trying to scare it off and the pellet rifle was the closest thing at hand.I didnt aim just shot at the dog and the pellet hit it in the neck just behind the head.It went about 50 yards and piled up. 0 -
I have a Gamo Hunter with the red dot. I have killed many a squirrel out to about 40 yards. I use it in the city I live in cause the squirrels like to get into my attic and chew on the wires. The nice thing about the gun is it is quite and the squirrels (and the cops) don't know someone is shooting a gun. 0 -
Actually, I shouldn't speak. I've got a CO2 pistol styled after a Beretta 92. It's pretty good with pellets, horrible with BBs. With pellets, you can actually take advantage of the rifling they put in the barrel. 0 -

Thanks for the Link- I see an RWS that looks very near what I had in mindl 'course Creedmoor has some Anschutz' that are also quite nice, but a bit more on target lines than I'm seeking. Zulu- if I wanted to shoot a 22 I'd just break-out the M52; but as was missed, the question was about air guns. 0 -
the new gamo boast a 1600 fps, it is the hunter extreme from gamo, almost $500 bucks, but if it works as they say, its pretty handy. 0 -
I was watching some guns on gun and gears tv one night, they were shooting high end pellet rifles that were down right blasting milk jugs. 0 -

I have been using raptors pellets for a long time now. I tried them out by using some hunting pellets shooting a thick phonebook, then I shot using raptors, 3/4 to 1 inch deeper. they work great. 0 -

there are times you cant use a 22 or 17hmr, Ive got then both. But in the area's around house's these days, you have crowded living areas, if you cant afford to buy a house with a few wooded acres around, you need a air rifle.0 -
