caliber for ALL north american game
I have a .270, but want a new gun that will enable me to shoot any of the larger NA game. Perhaps a brown bear, moose, or big horn sheep hunt is in my future. I hear alot about the 300 win mag, but there are so many other great calibers as well. Any thoughts?

Look no further than .30-06. 7 mag will work too. 0 -
30-06 cannot be beat for versitility. However, since you already have a 270, I would move up in caliber. 338-06 is a favorite of mine for bigger stuff. If I were considering a mag, it might be the 338 Win Mag. Just my thoughts. 0 -

Agree.....[:)][:)] I would add a single stage reloader, coffee pot, fireplace, old Walter, my dog, laying at my feet and you have many an enjoyable evening of my youth. [:D][:D]

The .300 Win Mag will do EVERYTHING the 30-06 will do and MORE. I'd take a .308 over the 30-06 any day...but my ultimate choice would be the .300 Win or the .300 RUM. 0 -

What are the advantages of the 300 win mag and/or 338.06 over the 30.06? I'm hesitant about getting the 30.06 since I already have the .270. Isn't the 30.06 a little light for a moose/alaskan brown bear. thanks 0 -
If an '60 can take all North American game, what "more" can the Win Mag do ??
If you just WANT a magnum, get the real one - a .300 Weatherby Magnum.

Moose have been taken with .257 Roberts and 6.5x55, shot placement is important. If you really are going to hunt Alsaskan brown bear a .338 would not be amiss, but will pound you, and is certainly unnecessary on all else. In the end you will get what you want, but the -06 will do the job with great versatility and without beating you to death. 0 -
Don't worry about shot placement just shoot it with a Barrett .50 BMG. 0 -
Just have to interject a little ration of reason here; the '06 is a fine, old round with a legendary past that has been used to take many a critter, but the 30-30 has taken more deer and elk than any other caliber.
I had a .308 for a while, and it wasn't going as far as I wanted or doing the job on anything bigger than cow elk.
I traded up.
I got me a 300 Win Mag and I've never felt the thundering recoil, or the powerful knockyoudown everybody else's brother or friend has. Granted, if you're built like a skinny, 12 year old girl; you might get 3 shots a week in if you heal quickly.
It goes waaay out there accurately, hits like a Mack truck (depending upon bullet selection-I reload, so I know what I'm getting), and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot really dangerous game with this caliber.
I shot a friend's BAR in 300WM, and it felt "jerky" in my hands rather than thumpy.
I have a Ruger 77MKII 300WM, an AR10 in 300RUM, and a 300WM Sako TRG-s; and of all those, I choose the Sako most often for almost any hunt.
It's a matter of realizing that where you shoot is more important than a slight difference in speed over the shorter calibers.
I wouldn't think about a 30-338 or stuff like the 375 or 460's, cuz they (supposedly) kick too hard![:D]0 -
Lets see, the do it all cartridge:
Handgun: 44 Mag
Single Shot Handgun: 375 JDJ
Shotgun: 12 gauge
Single Shot rifle: 375 H&H
Lever Action Rifle: 45/70 Govt
Bolt Action Rifle: 300 Win Mag0 -
There is, of course, no one correct answer. Everyone has their favorite, and no two hunters are alike. One can argue that, if the .30-06 can reach out and touch them all, then it is too big for half of them and too small for the other half.
My wife has a .300 Win. Mag that she uses on everything from elk to prairie dogs. It weights ten pounds! I don't have her eyesight, so shoot shorter distances. As I have aged, and become more comfortable with shot placement (and shot distances have shrunk even more), I have evolved from the '06 to a .270, and then to a 7-08.
The best caliber for hunting NA game is six pounds.0 -
The .300 win MAG is too much for some game. I like the 30.06. You can get it in many different bullets and a huge range of powers. It has served well as an all around load for many, many years. 0 -
My 450 Marlin is just the ticket for your hunting needs! It is good for about anything on the planet and will dress and process Deer and Elk!
For longer ranges you may need to hold it up over the target a bit but with some practice you will be as good as Elmer Keith.0 -

Yes a 30-06 will take down a big brown bear.....and a 22 short will take down a deer......but if I'm going after the brownie, I will be carrying my .338 RUM. That is what it was purchased for...someday I hope! If the big ones are possibly in your future, go ahead and go big...300 mag minimun...I vote bigger. 338 mags, 375's or 416. 0 -
