Stolen gun safe
SPENCER TOWNSHIP -- Police detectives are looking for leads in a recent theft -- and they're worried that dozens of guns will soon hit the street. They say someone stole a large gun safe from a home in the 9600 block of Dorr Street in Spencer Township.
The homeowner says the thieves broke in through a side window and removed the safe by unhinging the back door.
The safe held thirty guns, including assault rifles.

You are right azzhol* was a little strong i am sorry but it was a general comment and not aimed at directly at you or really anybody else. A person who does not bolt it down is asking for trouble as common sense would prevail as the delivery company rolled it in and it could go out the same way. 0 -

John- My guess would be, if they were prepared to come in and get that safe, willing to hurt the family dog, that more than likely they were prepared to act if the safe was bolted down.
Splash a few five gallon buckets around the room near the safe and go to work with a portable cutting torch. It really doesn't matter if it's bolted down at that point, it's probably a toss up with the amount of time it takes to move the entire safe and the amount of time it takes to cut one open.
I am sorry for your loss, first look into the delivery people who originally brought the safe, then into ANY body you know who knew you had a large amount of guns. The good news is that they will turn up, at least a few of them, and you will be able to go from there. Again really sorry for your loss, and I hope your dog recovers.0 -

First off, welcome to the forum, both of you. We hope you'll stick around. It's not a bad place if you can ignore the trolls and you have thick skin. Myself, I've been able to learn A LOT as well as occasionally being entertained.
I'm very sorry for your loss....I can't imagine what I'd feel like if someone stole my guns and beat up my dog.....I can imagine however, some of the things I'd do to them if caught. Good luck and God bless.0 -

I've seen many burglaries trace back in some way to people allowed access to the location while working as plumber's or heating/AC helpers, carpenter's helpers, contract cable or satellite installers, etc. In some cases the these people may actually commit the burglary themselves or just pass their intel on to others.
It's always a bad idea to allow strangers access to your residence where they can see that you have a large gun safe. It's sort of a clue that there are a lot of guns and probably your most expensive valuables in this box. They also know that the vast majority of folks don't bother to bolt these down because they assume it's too heavy for anyone to move. I've seen security videos of burglars picking up a 350lb safe and muscling it out the door by themselves.
They're a great idea, but you have to secure it solidly and take whatever steps necessary to keep it concealed from the view of anyone you don't trust.0 -
i just wanted to say thanx to everyone for yr concern this was my parents house and at least one of the guns was mine and it means a lot to me as it was the gun i shot my first deer with.

not to be an ass about anything but i just love how the story wrote about several "assault rifles" being in the safe. i read the list, i saw no "assault rifle" included.
3 years ago, my car got broken into. took all the change outa my car, dumped trash all throuogh it, and the took my "assault tire iron" with the custom "pistol iron" grip and my zoo monkey.
gross exaggeration, but they did take my tire iron and zoo monkey.
i am sorry that you guys had that happen to you. my uncle had his house broken into back in the early 80s. he had nearly that many guns. they guys left him 2. several were antiques and were handed down from my granddad. 2 years later, he was at a local hunting shop and saw 5 of them on the wall for sale. the gun shop knew him well and just gave him back all 5.0 -

The story also said that there were 30 guns in the safe. I only counted 19 guns on the list. Maybe the "assault rifles" were part of the 11 that were not listed.0 -
JILL-- again i am really sorry for my a****** comment it was not aimed at you but a general comment. I hope they recover the guns. I would be sick about it if it happened to me and for them to beat the dog that really gets me going.I hope the dog will be ok and i would really look at the people who recently may have seen the safe. 0 -
Hey everyone! Sorry I never got on to give an update...I have been really busy, both at work and with wedding plans as I am getting married in a month.
As I told Al, the safe was found about 2 weeks ago in the back of a stolen pick up truck that was then set on fire. They were able to use a torch to get into and empty out the safe. As far as I know there isn't any update on who might have done it. There have been a few suspects here and there but nothing that has turned out.
For those of you who had questions about the newspaper article, it was obviously inaccurate. They went off of the police report for that story without interviewing anyone. The police report was filled on the scene immeidatly after I found the house broken into so we had to give them a rough estimate of what was in there. After sitting down and listing everything, we found that some guns were elsewhere in the house so we were able to give a more accurate count and description.
No the safe was not bolted down but who would have thought a 1500lb safe would be so easy to get out of a house, especially when you have never had anything happen to you like this. If a new safe is purchased I am sure my dad will do things differently, unfortunatly at this point he doesn't have much to put in a safe
My dog, Gonzo, is fine. He is old so it was hard on him for a couple of weeks and obvious that he was sore, but he is much better now!
My dad is doing better too. He is definately more down then I have ever seen him but he has gotten allot of support from friends and family and even strangers, like you guys. He will always have his eyes open and I don't think he will ever trust people the same but he will be ok. He has started fixing up the house, all of the holes they put in the walls, broken doors and windows, and replacing furniture they broke and things seem to be going back to normal for us.
So keep us in your prayers, maybe someday we will find some of the stolen guns. It would be nice to at least find the ones with meaning that were handed down from family and friends. But really it would be nice to figure out who did this so we can put our minds to rest.
If I hear of anything else I will get back on and let you guys know.

Another gun theft in our area...still no update on our guns.
2 machine guns, ammo stolen from collector
Two machine guns, one with a silencer and both with ammunition, were stolen yesterday from a Springfield Township apartment, a Lucas County sheriff's detective said.
Someone broke into a unit at Country Trace Apartments, 1935 Country Trace Pl., and stole the 9mm and M60 guns between 12:30 and 2 a.m., Detective Mark Woodruff said.
The silencer was on the 9mm gun. The guns, both black, and related items are worth several thousand dollars, the investigator said.
The 52-year-old resident came home to find the back door kicked in, a gun safe in a spare bedroom pried open, and the guns missing. The weapons are legal and were for collecting and investment purposes according to a federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives stamp, the detective said.0 -

Just a couple of suggestions you can maybe try. Find where the stolen vehicle was dumped. If not too bad of a neighborhood, knock on some doors and ask if anyone saw anything. Try to find out where the vehicle was taken from-knock on a few doors there as well. Many times the thieves live nearby these areas.
Contact the local police agencies in your area including the game warden. Give or mail them a list of the stolen guns and serial numbers. Also check the small gun and pawn shops in your area. Many times thieves try to sell there. Leave them a list as well. Keep copies to give to your gun friends to watch for.
Finally-stay ready-many times people like these return to take advantage of the victim a second or third time. They may have seen something else they want while they were there. Keep a cell phone near your bed in case they cut your phone lines.
