What is your worst neightmare come true.
After many (30 or so), I can now talk about it.
I was a shift supervisor at 1 aero space comm group at SAC HQ Omaha NE
back around 75 or so. This was a VERY high traffic commcen.
Sometime in late Dec of that year, I arrived for work. I waited and waited for rest of shift to arrive but nothing. The outgoing shift unlawfully left since I did not lawfully relieve them.
Here is scenario. I am running whole shift by myself at one of most important commcens in whole world. Here is what transpired:
My most capable message handler was having dinner with his estranged wife and wanted some time that night. No Problem except I did not get phone number where to reach in emergency. Two clerks, His assistants, who were capable to handle messages, were involved in MINOR traffic mishalp and my OIC gave themn the night off without notifying me.
Since this was around Christmas, I was working on a Xmas schedule, which was normal, to let people off if work permitterd. Two other clerks got a DRAFT copy of schedule which showed them off that night.
Outcome: I called every person I could get hold of and had them to get to commcen. I ate the letter of repromand which only reported that I let my assistant off. Did not include that the OIC let two people off without notifying supervisor. Added: All the above except me and my assistant were all female. Tom

I was part of the backend crew of an E2B and one fine day in 1972 while in the Tonkin Gulf we were launching off the starboard cat of the USS Midway (CVA-41) to fly a standard Early Warning/Combat Support mission. The cat hit, we started going down the deck and about half way down the E2's starboard prop auto feathered. Witnesses on the deck said when we went over the bow our plane went down and out of sight followed by a lot of water coming up. Apparently we got close enough to the water that the port prop was picking up water. The pilot was as cool as cool could be and after all aircraft had launched, we made a very fast and flat single engine arrested landing. I seem to remember it took some time to pull my flight suit out of my puckered rear end. Since the Midway didn't have waist cats, the thought of the ship steaming over us wasn't particularly appealing! 0 -
You probably did the best thing, being Christmas and all, but I would have been mightily tempted to raise a poop storm. At the least I would have let the OIC know that once in a career is UNSAT. 0 -
On Dec.24 1987 I sucumbed to the amourous advances of a bar fly.
The payments end next month to the tune of 100K +0 -
ain't nothing at work I haven't been able to handle, and it's all been thrown at me one time or another. except getting held up. not a current nightmare, but if it happened it sure would be.

We had a huge storage tank of pressurized Propylene Oxide catch fire. The fire was on the exterior of the tank, but if the tank were to heat up and rupture, the north end of our town would be a crater.
We use thousands of pounds of the stuff every shift, get whiffs of it if there are leaks(a daily thing). We see it and use it so much that we really don't realize how dangerous the stuff is.
Look up the stuff, it's used in fuelbombs and all kinds of stuff.
We also use Phosphorus OxyChloride, that stuff with eat through you in no time.
as well as Hydrochloric and sulfuric acid
50% DS Sodium Hydroxide
Acetic Anhydride
Sulfur Dioxide
35% Hydrogen Peroxide - if spilt on your leather boots and left there, they'll burst into flames.
Aqueous Ammonnia
All kinds of cool chemicals. I use them in huge amounts every day. I hope everyday that nothing serious happens.0 -
Well, this didn't happen to me... it happened to my dad... but I think its one of the worst I've heard.
He's going into work one morning, and as he walks in the door he lets out a fart- or what he thought was a fart. He actually craps his pants.
Now, while this alone would ruin your day, it gets worse. He was giving a big presentation that day to the company owners. So basically he had to scramble to the bathroom and clean himself up as best he could, and hope the owners didn't notice. [:0]0 -
Rode a chopper out to a satellite platform out in the Gulf of Mexico to run some wire on slickline. If you don't know what a satellite platform is, they are very small, nothing but a couple oilwells and grating with a chopper pad on top out in the middle of the ocean. We had a green hand with us. There is no safe place to smoke on these platforms but we always just went up wind to smoke a cigarette.
So the chopper takes off and we rig up and start running in the hole. Well the green hand goes up wind to burn one as we were coming out the hole on our first run. We bleed off the pressure (I remember this well had a shut in pressure of 2500) through a needle valve screwed into the bottom section of our lubricator to atmoshpere since it was a gas well. Well I yell at that green hand to get his ass over here to unscrew the lubricator and unstab it (I was just a senoir hand at the time before I broke out and became a operator). Well I'm bleeding GAS to the atmosphere and this idiot comes running up with his cigarette hanging out his mouth. I screamed at him to put the damn cigarette out before he blew us up. The operator hucked a 24" pipe wrench at him barely missing him haha. The rest of the day if he didn't do what we told him exactly the operator would huck a pipe wrench at him haha. He learned fast after that.[;)]
That could of been really bad since we were on a satellite platform and there is absolutely no where to run expect hopping off the platform into the gulf, but it turned into a joke when he got some experience under his belt.0 -
As I was growing up, I had a neighbor who was in his late 30's. He told me a story about a friend of his in high school was about 5'2" 120lbs of lean muscle. He beat up some kid outside of school, who told him he was going to send his older brother after him.
Later that week, he my neighbor were in the school parking lot at the end of the day, cars leaving. They were just hangin out when this great big dude walked up to him carrying a 4' length of 2x4, rears back like a baseball player and just cracks him in the side of the head with it. It split his head open, and he gets up off the ground, looks the dude in the eyes, and says "Is that all you F'n got?"0 -
Pulled a guy out of the Mississippi River in -10 degree weather about 11 years ago in St. Louis. As we carried him up the river bank by his coveralls, I noticed my blue jeans were already frozen by the time I reached the top of the bank. We got him to the break room. Threw the picnic table on the side and laid him down. He just laid on the floor moaning. His skin color was purple.
It amazed me in times of crisis, you can bark out orders to anyone, no matter how absurd it sounds, and people will do it.
Tell one guy to start striping the wet coveralls off him and he does it. Tell another guy to drive out to Hall St. and make sure the ambulance doesn't drive past, and he stands out there in the middle of nowhere. Told another guy, a real smart ass, to stand next to the KMOX reporter and make sure he doesn't talk to anyone, and the smart ass does it. Amazing.
KMOX reported the guy died. Wrong.0 -

I've noticed that in a few of the calls we've been on. As lazy as some of the people around here are, you scream at them for another 02 tank or a backboard and C-Collars, and they'll be back in minutes with what they were told.0 -
It still amazes me how many people freeze in an emergency. 0 -
"Anyway, Nutsack caught Web coming out of the liquor store and tore him apart with his basher, a choke-chain with a huge-ass Master lock on it. I saw it all go down. A lot of folks did.
Web was left permanently maimed and brain damaged. He has a big-ol' smiley scar on the side of his head from where Nutsack took him down. He walks with a serious limp, you can't understand a word he says and drools profusely from a toothles permanent grin."
I love to hear of a bully getting his comeuppance.
For God's sake, badwrench, that is one tough neighborhood you grew up in!

Back in the day, we had taken a lot of kids into the Army that had IQs so low they had previously been barred from service. Had one on the M-79 grenade launcher range. From the prone position he accidentally managed to fire an HE round STRAIGHT UP. (Hint- what goes up, must come down) Those little golden bullets have a 5 meter kill radius when they detonate. We all hit the dirt, round impacted maybe 25 meters forward of us. My senior NCO took the kid in hand, and applied corrective action. PS- most of the permanent cadre on the basic training hand grenade range could be identified by the graying hair, trembling hands, and tendency to jump at loud noises. 0 -
I was once at a cocktail party and they ran out of those little cheese cubes on a toothpick. Thought I'd never make it to dinner time but found some inner reserve and pulled through. Still wake up in a cold sweat over it every now and then. 0 -

True, we have one individual ON OUR EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM who completely freaks out when he goes to a call. He'll head out to direct the ambulance, or some trivial thing like that.
The last call I went on was a finger amputation, we got the call, he and I left at the same time from the same room, and he disappeared until we loaded the patient into the ambulance.
He's the character I keep talking about that has tried to get numerous people fired for innocent things, the biggest crybaby I've ever met. He's also the Vietnam Veteran who brags about shooting people and has shrapnel in his arm, but no scar.0 -
Rookie Doctor attending an inner city ER late at night.
Myself, an RN, and two LPN's. Two recent arrivals: a 47 y/o F in profound diabetic ketoacidosis, and a 19 y/o M in severe broncospasm. Murphy's law in effect.
Simultaneous cardiorespiratory arrest. What to do?

My country sold itself out due to self serving politicians.
Making almost $60k a year and not able to afford a house due to housing market being to expensive.
Living 10,000 miles from my Gun Collection....and no place to shoot a firearm where I'm at.
Busting my back and no longer able to ride a motorcycle.
LIVING ON GUAM.
Yeah....top that. Wish I was making $20k a year and in Kentucky living in a shack in the woods. Hmmm......I see a light coming on in this stupid skull......0 -
