spring, then plug with the big end up, then end cap.

With the small 20 gauge frames, the shells are sometimes very finicky to get into the magazine tube at all, plug or not.

If you have problems with your shells, try another brand and/or send the gun back to remington when you get time. They may be able to correct that.

Gunfunco...thanks! I got in in, and it works, but I got it in backward from what you said. I have the plug on the bottom, poking up thruogh the spring. Looks like I need to take it apart AGAIN and have another wrestle with that dang spring! These are
3-inch shells, so that might have something to do with it.

It really should work on top or bottom as long as the small end extends through the spring so you are not adding additional load to(over-compressing)the spring. I've used it both ways in my 870 and never noticed a difference. Actually I have on occasion stacked a couple of live shells on the top end of the spring instead of the plug (emergency rounds) and never had a problem though it could cause the spring to weaken over time.

Dakota is correct but I always found that it is much easier to get that last bit of spring into the tube when you have it stabilized on the plug to keep it from flinging out sideways.

Thanks! Got it in the way gunfunco said. FINALLY! Works like a charm now! I have never had any problem with my Winchester, but this Remington is nuts! Now to go shoot some ducks!!

I have always used a wooden dowel slightly longer than one shell. I let it float inside the spring. I keep losing the Rem plug. Worked for son's 20 ga 870 and 1100 and my 12 ga 870 and 1100. There is probably some real problem with that but I could not figure a downside to it. Learned the process when we needed a plug to continue the hunt and no stores open at 4:00am on the lake. Actually whittled one out of a stick.
Have fun. We bought our duck stamps this week. Quack Quack.
