outer banks-north carolina
anybody ever go there on vacation or to fish,me and the wife have been going since 85 i first went as a boy in 74 we were married there sept 11 2001 yep wife had it planned for over a yr,only good news we had on that sad day,but ya gotta love the place we go in sept,love the deserted beaches and good surf fishin,love to eat my share of flounder/shrimp any body else go down to the shore?[:D]

I went there a lot in the '50's before it became an overdeveloped nightmare tourist trap. Remember Jeanette's Pier?
Ocracoke hasn't been spoiled yet, but, that is only because the NPS owns most of it. I agree that the off season is the best time to go to the Outer Banks.0 -

yea i remember the pier,we were run outa there by hurricane isabel i think that was the name punched right thru the island below frisco they finally fixed the breach up in kitty hawk,nags head area it does resemble a tourist trap, i would have loved to have seen it in the 50s-60s ocracoke has grown all it can i believe we have spent a couple weeks there over the yrs,oh the food!!!!!! gotta love it0 -

Isabelle took out Kitty Hawk pier, my personal favorite. Used to catch trout and drum there by the dozens. They built a new hotel there, so no more fishing. [V]
I live @ 45 mins away from the banks, and still go to Nags Head pier and the Outer Banks pier closer to Oregon Inlet. Nice folks at each. Never cared for Jennette's / Avalon piers...just not as friendly an atmosphere as the others.
Fall/Winter is my favorite time to go, and mainly at night.0 -

anyone ever stay up in cordova up the beach towards virginia,i hear the traffic is bad due to all the construction of new homes in the four wheel drive areas 0 -
maybe its me, but for some reason the outer banks strike me as one of the most boring and miserable places on earth, catering mostly to people who have never seen the ocean, or, to people who like to get new homes paid for by the govt everytime a hurricane comes thru and blows it apart. but thats just me...and im so sick of the ocean, i hope i NEVER see it again.[xx(] 0 -

I remembered something about Nags Head, reading this thread. I was about 12 and somebody hooked a huge shark off Jeannette's pier. A big crowd gathered and when the shark got in close enough to the pier, somebody shot it with a high-powered rifle and then the shark was winched up out of the water. I believe that was fairly common procedure back then. My mom wouldn't let me swim after that.
If anyone ever goes to Ocracoke, there is a fantastic decoy shop there. You can still take a guided duck or geese hunt out of Ocracoke.0 -
My family and I were VERY lucky to spend 9 months on the OuterBanks. Arrived before tourist season and left afterwards. We were considered part of the regular crowd because of this. This REALLY opened up some doors for us.
We were leaving when the construction on the new bridge from Manteo was just being finished. Drive to the east end of the bridge, go to Va Dare trail, hang a right, we lived on the sound side of the street - 9810 S VaDare trail, I believe is the address - directly across from the first public beach access. John, homeowner, is my age, so we got along great.
Fishing - oh yeah. Boss and I rented the Pink yacht in the marina - caght 1500 pounds of fish (11 75-90 pound tuna, one shark, one wahoo, and a huge amount of dolphin-not porpoise). Fresh tuna is NOT like anything in the can or frozen...better than any lobster I have ever had. We love to do it again.
The snakes are something else. Water mocassin crossed with some other snake - never been chased by a snake until I lived there.0 -
I would move down there tomarrow if it were not for the wife she still has 6 yrs to retire from her job,i think a person can get a decent house to live in on the other side of manteo,we have looked before,we always stay on hatteras island when we go,the solitude of rodanthe in the off season is what we seek,i like the surf fishing on hatteras point south of the light house,never know what you are going to reel in,we were staying just north of the avon pier the yr the poor russian guy and his girl friend were attacked by a shark,about a 1/8 of a mile below us,that was the last yr we went out past our knees in the water,I always said it was more of an adventure than a vacation[:D][^] 0
