Why are snowblowers 2 cycle?
I hate 2 cycle engines; nor do I think they will last as long as one with a pan. So... mowers have 4 cycle engines, why not snowblowers? The obvious initial answer would be b/c of the cold but there are plenty of low temp oils out there that could be used.
I ask as I may be in the market for a new one this winter and would like a 4 cycle if such a thing is available.

Sorry Guys, there seems to be a Small Canadian company(SkiDoo) that hasnt heard that yet. The parent company BRP(Bombardier Recreational Products) also owns Johnson/Evenrude and Rotax of Austria. I think two strokes will be around for a few more years. [:D]0 -

Close, but no cigar. The radial design is the real reason. Since the engine is a 4-stroke it means that each piston goes through four cycles for every one power pulse. Should a radial have an even number of cylinders in one bank it simply wouldn't work. The valve actuating arrangement is the killer among other things.

Some of the early engines only had one valve as I recall. Top ends required grease as no oil got there. Fuel/castor oil mix was fed through the bottom end. These would 2-stroke quite nicely, but had a very short service life.
Two valve per cylinder engines were always 4 stroke. Liberty engines as an example. Of course these were inline motors. Water cooled no less!0 -
Oh contrere Nord- a radial engine can have an even number of cylinders and will work despite your claims- don't believe me? Check out how many cylinders a Corsair has. Evidently it was close enough- maybe it was an M26. 0 -

Two strokes are used in the smallest of snowblowers because of weight, the large machines will have 4 strokes in them. Small 2 stroke snowblowers are still being made. Anyone remeber the old Toro Snow-Pups? Very good reliable machine! 0 -

Corsair, B-29, and others did, indeed, have an even number of cylinders, but they used multiple rows to get them. Most common configuration was either seven or nine cylinders. Twin banks gave an even number.

not quite true the two cycle Detroit diesels have valves.....exhaust valves, but these engine have to have a blower as they have ports on the bottom of the sleeves that allow new air charge to enter and push out exhaust.[:D]0 -
There were a number of rotaries like LeRhone, Oberursel, Bentley and Gnome. Fuel and air mix entered through a hollow, stationary crankshaft and into the cylinders via a poppet valve in the pistons.
Exhaust valves were timed to open at 6 o'clock position where the cowls were open. Exhaust and unburnt oil blew out along the bottom of the plane making a mess. Pilots got the runs from inhaling the stuff.
There is at least one different arrangement where fuel is carried to the cylinders through external tubes.
Two strokes are more powerful for a given displacement than four strokes because there is a power stroke per each revolution instead of every two revolutions. However, they are less efficient and have a higher specific fuel consumption despite not having reciprocating valves that eat into efficiency of four strokes.
Because they have simpler construction they are cheaper. They are lighter and better than four strokes for chain saws,weed wackers or other portable machines that have to operate at different angles.
Since piston rings have to sweep past exhaust ports in valveless two strokes, ring breakage is an issue.
Some early aero engines had grease fittings on their exposed rocker arms.0 -

You need to get out more often.. Honda and Ryobi have been making four stroke trimmers for years. In Fact Ryobi was the first to put them on the market way back in the late 80's with the 600 series trimmers.
And about the bike.
You learn to ride. Their quite a few custom's around here that have no primary covers.

Shindaiwa C4 or Stihl's 4 Mix engine. They are a four stroke design that still uses two cycle oil to lube the entire engine.

2 Strokes did not die in 2006.
Just bought the little one a KTM 50 Adventure motorcycle that is two stroke. Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki all still make small two stroke 60 powered motorcycles.
Toro killed the Lawnboys.
When they bought LawnBoy all they did was shut down the plant that made them and started to paint some of their junk LB green and call them a Lawnboy.
Sure glad to have two Silver Series Dura Force engined Lawnboys to enjoy for a few years.0 -
That radial engined motorcycle must out torque anything on two wheels
but it looks like it only has enough gas to get around the block.
Besides the heat that must come off that thing, I hope the rider hasn't anything hanging that will some time or another get caught in that open belt reduction drive.
I don't see an exhaust collector ring.
A lotta work for an impractical one of a kind machine.
I'd rather play with the T28 or Bearcat behind him.0 -

Here we try not to use Diptroits as they mostly convert energy into noise and fumes, but I'll agree. You are correct. Of course you're aware that the subject was radial engines and I haven't seen any in diesel configuration. Lately or ever for that matter.
Even though I'm aware that you were giving me a poke in the ribs (richly deserved), I'll correct my statement... Exhaust & Intake valve(s).[}:)] How's that?
By the way, we use real diesels around these parts. Straight six configuration, turbo-boosted, and tough as nails. Just a hint here... A big "C" medallion on the side of our vehicles.[:D] Can you pronounce Dodge RAM?

When the weather gets dry they slide off the mountain and frequent a picnic area just off Interstate 86 in Painted Post, NY. Sort of a NY welcome for the unsuspecting tourists when they discover they're sharing a picnic table with our local buzztails.

V35, good call on the Trojan but I'm pretty sure the other plane isn't a Bearcat. The Bearcat had a rounded fin and no fin strake. That one looks like a trike too. Maybe a later version of a Tigercat? 0 -

The cylinder cooling might be a little better on this one and it's got an exhaust collector ring.
The lower two rocker covers look like they'll go with the first bump and that open chain may suck his foot into the drive sprocket.
The rider's goin to need an asbestos suit.
I'm too much of a utilitarian to appreciate a lot of time and expense going into an obviously impractical design in the interest of being unique. Function over form.
The vertical fin on the right plane does look F9ish. It could be a Tigercat but that was tricycle if I recall.0 -

And now Toro,Wheelhorse,Husky,Cub Cadet,John Deere's,and who knows what else are all MTD! Craftsman isn't but its similar! Been lookin at buying a new riding mower and all I can find in the lower end are rebadged MTD's! Plastic bushings and all! Guess I'm going to buy a new Briggs for the old Case if I can figgure out what'll replace it.

Interesting, you're right. I wonder if it's the only 2 stroke rototiller. I've been out of small engines for a while since then I excelled in automotive and diesel trucks. So I tend to think less of lawn & gardening equipment. One thing is certain to me you have to pay attention to what is going on to offer true support on anything. People far too often step over social boundaries. Either you're a realy nice guy using ambiguous statements attempting to help or quite possibly a passive aggressive attempting humor in a bipolar way. I'm not too sure how to interrupt why you seem to express your feelings, I didn't intend to hurt you, and you're not my enemy. I view this occurance as friendly fire, I hope you do to. 0 -
