A-2 and A-3
Been looking into AR-15's and wondering what the difference between a A-2 and a A-3 is. I know a A-1 has a carry handle you can't remove and a A-2 has the handle you can remove. What difference is there in a A-3?

Hmmm...I always thought the A1 had a non-removable carry handle, the shorter buttstock, triangular forend, lighter barrel (kinda your Vietnam-era M16 look), an A2 has a non-removable carryhandle and looks like the more modern M16A2 (round handguards, longer buttstock, heavy barrel), and the A3 is flat-top A2 (removable carry-handle, if you want to put one on).
But I could be wrong. It has been known to happen...0 -
The A2 has a non-removable carry handle, the A3 usually comes with out one called a flat-top. Also maybe more to it than that, but I am a Nu B to AR's too. 0 -

Don't know about ARs but for the M16 family, here's the layout:
M16 and M16A1: Vietnam-era, both full auto, triangular fore-grips, non-removable carry handle.
M16A2: Modern era, heavier barrel than A1, oval fore-grips (some have received A4 picantinny rail hand grips), 3-round burst capable, non-removable carry handle.
M16A3: Same as A2 except full auto capable.
M16A4: Same as A2 except with flat-top receiver, removable carry handle, and picantinny rail fore-grips.
M4 Carbine: M16A4 with collapsable buttstock and 14.5" barrel. Fore grips shortened proportionally, newer ones have factory installed picantinny fore-grips, older ones have A2 style oval hand grips.
M4A1 Carbine: Same as M4, just full auto capable.0 -

I thought the difference between A1 and A2's was that the A2's start with the forward assist and shell deflector and the 1 in 8' or 1 in 9" rifling twist. 0 -

The A1 had the forward assist. The A2 had the brass deflector and 1 in 7 rifling twist. The 1 in 7 continues through all current M16s and M4s.0 -

So on a A-2 I can't take off the carry handle to put on one of those holigram red dot scopes? 0 -
No you cant take it off but with a rail system you can use a holo sight such as EoTech and co-witness the sights.
You can also get a rail mounted on the carry handle and mount whatever you want. It may be a little high but that depends on you.
Sounds like you are more intrested in the A3.
