low down on vista
here is my conclusion on vista
it is a 64 bit operating system, unlike xp's 32 bit, the new duo/dual core chips are pushing for 64 bits, as with there express graphics card is pushing 16X {8x2}, i personally think it is a marketing ploy to keep up with technology, years ago when you bought a computer is was considered a dinosaur in six months, but in the past few years hardware has surpassed software, i have yet to find software that requires anything past 4X agp, nor have i found anything that even would come close to requiring a 64 bit system
of course this will change in the future, but even if you went out and bought the top of the line duo core system with vista by time software that requires it comes of it will have needed to be replaced from burning out of old age, in my opinion duo core technology has done one thing, lower the price of a good amd or p4 system, and vista just lowered the price of xp pro, heck they even have a quad core out with the cpu only for around 900 bucks

Thought I read somewhere that Vista can be installed as a 32 OR 64 bit OS -- but I can't find that info. Do you know anything about that? 0 -
Actually there are plenty of programs that need more then a 4x video card and demand the use of a 64 bit processor to run well. These programs include 3d graphics software, 3d modeling software, post processors for many different functions, and games. I don't want to have to wait 5 minutes for something a more powerful computer could do in 30 minutes. 0 -

Yep, they call it Intel 64 (formerly EM64T), which has been available for some time on mainstay Pentium 4 CPUs.

PCI Express (16x) is capable of 4 Gb/s bi-directional, whereas AGP 4x can only do 1 Gb/s *shared*. When you play video-intensive games at high-resolutions, the additional bandwidth (all things being equal) will improve your potential framerate, ultimately offering a more realistic experience. Many hardcore gamers actually install 2 PCI Express cards, enabling the work to be split between the cards.
As for 64-bit systems, they can operate on twice as much code and data per clock cycle as a 32-bit CPU (again, all things being equal). It's somewhat similar to a 4-barrel carb being able to shove more air and fuel into your engine, or picking up 2 hands full of marbles vs. 1 handful at once.
Once you've seen Vista on a multi-core 64-bit system chewing through video processing (eg. taking a dual-layer DVD image and recoding it to single-layer), or with a nice video subsystem playing a new first-person shooter on a large display at a high resolution rate (heck, even while you're recoding that DVD!), you'll agree that it makes XP look like Windows 3.1.

I don't know about support for Vista, but I had a devil of a time finding printer drivers for my professor's 64-bit XP. I couldn't even find a driver for a color laserjet 2550, a newer HP printer, so I had to do things bass-ackwards and make the computer think it was a device that I could find drivers for (an HP 4500).
In other words: check to make sure that all of your hardware and peripherals will work with Vista. You don't want to pay an asinine amount for the OS only to buy a new printer, scanner, etc etc.0 -

yes it is availible in 32 bit, but their pushing the 64 bit
my p4 in xp {32bit} can chew through a double layer dvd in 9 minutes, from analyzing to encoding
i still think it is miniscule differences, and marketing, comparisons have been with high end duo core systems vs. low end p4 systems, and i still cannot find anything that actually requires 64 bit0 -

Cant wait to upgrade my Compaq 8088-1 luggable to Vista.
Then I can finally dump CPM 1.0.

People, People... Is anyone really doing anything with their PC that they really need to upgrade....
Every prog that I own runs very well with XP.. Heck 90% of the population only use these things to surf the net and piracy of movies and tunes. Oh and of course killing hours posting on GB... Save your moola it'll e on your next PC anyway.....0 -

exactly my point, with most peoples current system there are no software that has exceeded the current hardware, as i stated i think the industry has had to put new life in the market, not just with vista, but with Intel as well, a hyperthreading p4 will do just fine in every application, and for most it is about 125.00 upgrade vs. a entire new cpu0 -
