I Confess, I'm Ignorant
911 woke me up to being a citizen and just how lucky I am to live in the USA.
Zumbo woke me up to the fact that I haven't been actively protecting my rights as a gun owner. That Sunday was the first time in my life that I actually wrote to anyone concerning my right to own any gun I choose to own. But beyond that I found myself facing a dilemma and not knowing how to react. What are the issues? I am sad to say that I don't know. I wish I knew how to engage someone in a debate about gun ownership without it turning into a polemic.
Last night I took a small step and listened to the streaming news report from the NRA site. It helped a little. The program is aired from 6pm to 9pm EST. Just go to http://nra.com and look on the left of the page.
Many of the members of GB already know this information. But I know that there are many more members who are just like me. We are out shooting, enjoying our sport and not doing a damn thing to make sure we can continue to do so.
Oh, did I say sport? What about the time I stayed home from work for three days because a murderer was loose in my neighborhood and I was concerned for my children and myself. I had a loaded .357 and a commitment to use it if necessary. I didn't think anything about the fact that it should be my right to defend my children and myself.
I am no longer going to be one of the silent majority. I am going to educate myself and as I do I will post my findings here in hopes of encouraging others to take action as well.
I need your support and suggestions. Please tell me what you have found helpful and meaningful to stop the erosion of our constitutional rights.

Polemic - containing or expressing passionate and strongly worded argument against or in favor of something or somebody.
Whenever someone tries to scream me into agreeing with them I have a tendency to tune out and never listen to them again. That is why I can't stand talk radio. I want to educate myself to ask questions and discuss calmly, not beat someone over the head. I think that most polemics are not well versed in their subject matter and resort to volume over content.
During the Zumbo event some were saying that he should be shot. It is one thing to say something like that when one is face to face with another and they can read your facial expressions and see that it is just a figure of speech. When you put that same thing in writing one can read it literally and use it as an example of deadly extremism. Not a smart thing to do at all.0 -

Have you read about the battle of Athens, Tenn. or the Miller court case yet? Both would be good places to start, as well as referencing old laws designed to deprive arms of those the government/rich folk wanted control over (Indians, Blacks, immigrants). Follow up with some light reading on the modern (past 100 years) political histories of countries that have imposed strict arms control (Italy, Germany, etc). Going back further, there was the Not So Civil War (states revolting against the fed govnt), and before that there was our revolutionary war, which is where it all sorta begins.

BOSTON - National guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed on April 19th by elements of a para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw.
Speaking after the clash Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement. Gage blamed the extremists for recent incidents of vandalism directed against internal revenue offices. The governor, who described the group's organizers as "criminals," issued an executive order authorizing the summary arrest of any individual who has interfered with the government's efforts to secure law and order. The military raid on the extremist arsenal followed wide-spread refusal by the local citizenry to turn over recently outlawed assault weapons.
Gage issued a ban on military-style assault weapons and ammunition earlier in the week. This decision followed a meeting in early this month between government and military leaders at which the governor authorized the forcible confiscation of illegal arms.
One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out that "none of these people would have been killed had the extremists obeyed the law and turned over their weapons voluntarily." Government troops initially succeeded in confiscating a large supply of outlawed weapons and ammunition. However, troops attempting to seize arms and ammunition in Lexington met with resistance from heavily-armed extremists who had been tipped off regarding the government's plans. During a tense standoff in Lexington's town park, National Guard Colonel Francis Smith, commander of the government operation, ordered the armed group to surrender and return to their homes. The impasse was broken by a single shot, which was reportedly fired by one of the right-wing extremists. Eight civilians were killed in the ensuing exchange. Ironically, the local citizenry blamed government forces rather than the extremists for the civilian deaths. Before order could be restored,
armed citizens from surrounding areas had descended upon the guard units. Colonel Smith, finding his forces overmatched by the armed mob, ordered a retreat. Governor Gage has called upon citizens to support the state/national joint task force in its effort to restore law and order. The governor also demanded the surrender of those responsible for planning and leading the attack against the government troops. Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and John Hancock, who have been identified as "ringleaders" of the extremist faction, remain at large.

I am sure that discussions about the Revolution and WHY it started will not be welcome..after all, the NRA supports gun laws...so those Founders were just radical old dead white guys...0 -

This maybe a dum qustion, but have you joined the NRA yet? Then find out who you need to write to, to stop the HR1022 gun ban. 0 -
I think a good step would be to invest in whatever flavor of cable or satellite TV you prefer and start watching the outdoor and firearms shows that are airing on The Outdoor Channel and also VS. I think you should pay special attention to some of the firearms shows that give tons of information on not only firearms tactics but also education about how they operate. This will help you to refute much of the claims of the masses of Anti's that would tell you that no one needs an "assault" rifle, when you get into it you will find that they operate no differently than a .22 auto-loading plinker like my Glenfield/Marlin 60 or my M1911A-1 .45 ACP. These weapons technology have been around for over a century!
Also we need to realize that our founding fathers and framers of the constitution and in particular the 2nd amendment, knew that having a Brown Bess or any other state-of-the-art (of the time) firearm was part of the rights they wanted to insure to the people so that the government could never have all the good strong firepower and leave only the antiquated pieces to the people leaving them helpless to defend themselves against an oppressive draconian government.
Also like I said at first, I think one of the best things you can do for you and your family is to watch those channels/shows together and learn together as a family. Even the children. Especially watch Ted Nugent's "Spirit of the Wild." It will educate, enlighten, and fill you and your family with the wholesome strength and spirit of American liberties and freedoms being led by God's wisdom and a love for all that is good in life! It is a very informative and fulfilling show!
More people really need to watch him and take the things he says to heart. He is, in my opinion, the greatest thing Hunters and Shooters have going for us right now!0
