Cop accidentally shoots self in hand while driving

ROSENDALE - An off-duty City of Kingston police officer accidentally shot himself in the hand with a personal firearm while driving on state Route 32, the city police chief said on Thursday.
Officer Lewis Olson, 35, a Kingston resident and 11-year veteran of the force, was southbound on Route 32 near DeWitt Mills Road in Rosendale about 10:15 a.m. Monday when he glanced into a carry bag on the floor of his car's passenger side and noticed his .22-caliber Derringer was cocked, Chief Gerald Keller said.
Keller said Olson, while still driving, attempted to uncock the pistol using both hands. The weapon accidentally fired, and Olson was struck by a single round in the webbing between his left thumb and index finger, the chief said. The bullet then struck the driver's side window and shattered the glass, he said.
Olson turned around and drove himself to Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, and he also called the Ulster County Sheriff's Office to tell them what happened, Keller said. The chief said sheriff's deputies met Olson at the hospital, where he was treated and released.
Keller said Olson was alone in the car, a private vehicle, and that he had a license to own and carry the pistol.
Keller said no criminal or disciplinary action has been taken against Olson but that the police department is investigating the incident.

Back when I was a kid our PD had a group of kindergarters at the station. One of the senior (not rookie[;)]) officers was showing the different firearms that they had. He pulled an old winch 30/30 out of the cabinet, and somehow shot a hole in the ceiling.

I don't understand why he would blow the whistle on himself unless he did it to cover up something else.
He should have poured some alcohol in it and put a band-aid on it, then get the window fixed.

I agree, something does not smell right here.
He just happen to look in his gear bag while driving and notice the gun was cocked; then instead of pulling over to deal with the offending weapon he takes both hands off the steering wheel to un-cock the gun. If it had been a simple pistol permit holder he would have been charged with reckless endangerment, or at least a class A stupidity charge.0 -
Because if you tell the truth, little will be made of it. If you try to cover it up, the department will throw you under the bus.

Yes in New York you need a pistol permit to even own a handgun, not just to carry.
And now many of the police deparments require officers to get a pistol permit, they wanted to cut down on officers "Buying On Tin" when officers retired there was no way of knowing how many handguns they owned. In NY all of your handguns are listed on your permit.0 -

You know another sad thing is, construction workers in NY have to have a permit to have those .22 or .27 blank cartridges to shoot nails with a ramset nail gun. sad day in NY 0 -
