When you start with a bad premise, then apply rational logic to it, you wind up with a bad conclusion.

The bad premise in this case is that the cost of crude is $1.71 per gallon. Remember, this is about what we were paying at the pump a year ago. That may be what is called a "burdened" cost, which includes all aspects of the sale - including profits at various stages. It is followed by some more incorrect statements. If the oil companies are profiting at 8 cents per gallon, what is the 29 cents per gallon cost of refining about ?? It's impossible to believe that this figure is the actual COST of refining the oil, with no oil company profits included. Who owns the refineries - THE OIL COMPANIES - the refineries are what is called a "profit center" - notice the word "PROFIT". And, 32 cents per gallon for marketing and distribution - as a COST -with no profit ?? Not a chance. One cent per gallon gross profit for the retailer ?? No one would be in the business if that were true. There are far better investments that can be made with a MUCH higher return. If these figures were correct, why then are the oil companies posting such incredible profits ??

The person who wrote this is obviously trying to use these warped numbers as a tool against the dems, and for the Republicans, specifically President Bush.

He is playing with semantics and twisting words.

I think you all know that I am a pretty rabid conservative, and a supporter of the President, and mostly, of the Republican philosophy. But, playing games like this that are out-and-out falsehoods, is no way to prevail.

Bare in mind... we OWN and control Iraq. We can set the costs of what we pay for crude, at any level we want.

In conclusion, I woud say that if you are going to lie about something, at least make it a GOOD lie.

"Based upon a $3.00 gallon of gasoline, the average break-down is as follows.

Gasoline Retailer $.01 cents per gallon
Oil Company $.08 cents per gallon
    Refining $.29 cents per gallon
    Marketing/Distribution $.32 cents per gallon
    Taxes $.59 cents per gallon
Cost of crude $1.71 per gallon (delivered)"

This is a quote from tysonagreen's post.

"This sounds like a great idea, but it isn't. It doesn't work. Mostly because it results in more fuel being purchased before and after the specified day. Which means equal income for the oil companies.

I wish Americans would stop acting so naive about oil prices. Does anyone think its odd that oil prices are rising oil and consumption is too? You shouldn't, thats economics 101. The oil companies are smart. They know about supply and demand. They know how to maximize their profits. They are a business, that is their goal. Gas prices will continue to rise as long as Americans are willing to pay for it. When demand starts to drop off, gas prices will plateau, assuming the price is still higher than the cost.

I love watching the eving news, where they interview Joe Blow on the street about gas prices. Why is gas the only commodity for which the average citizen is an expert? My guess is that if they interviewed an actual expert, that expert would explain why gas prices are what they are. This explanation would not have anything to do with conspiracies and evil empires. It might, however, end the gas price media frenzy which is making a lot of money for the broadcast companies. Surprisingly, the broadcasting companies are more interested in turning a buck than they are in producing truthful news programs, go figure.

Sorry for the rant, I just get tired of all the people that complain about something when they don't have the slightest idea about it. You can't get all your info off of blogs. Just because you found it on the internet doesn't make it true. In fact, now a days I like to assume everything on the internet is false and work from there."

    He is correct.

I think we have fuzzy math at work here.

Remember you can make your profit numbers come out less by simply increasing costs. So if the oil companies really makes a profit of $1.50 per gallon they would never want to show that so they order their army of accountants, remember I am one, to increase the expenses/costs, ie, purchase of machine tools, equipment, pipelines, drilling, oil platforms, etc to raise depreciation, book expenses to you and that profit disapears. Then they increase 401K distributions, Union wages, Bonuses to Officers, Stockholder dividends, reserves for contingincies, depletion of oil reserve games, build new buildings, invest in ethonal plants, buy up corn fields, wind turbines, solar energy, etc.

They simply invest their profits off the Profit and Loss statements and into the Balance Sheet. You can reduce profits to whatever level you choose. I have done it for many corporations. Perfectly legal as long as its recorded properly in the books.

If you do your research and look long and hard at the financial affairs of the large oil companies that is exactly what they are doing. Its no mystery folks. Read fortune magazine, they are talking about all the oil companies buying up the ethonal production and other energy production resources. This is a major expense that reduces all that excess profit. Plus when they have control of all the other energy resources watch the prices soar on those options. They will put them out of business again like they did with the oil shale, and many other optional sources of energy in the past.

Government needs to step in and insure that competition exists in energy production and prevent the oil companies from moving in on other sources of energy, like natural gas, ethonal, solar, nuke, and wind power.

Nobody likes paying more for something,.....but all of this supposed outrage, by "Joe Blow" consumer, is BS!!
Last time gas went over 3 bucks a gallon,......I never noticed ANY drop in volume of traffic, and the a**holes, still taking off from a light or stop sign like Don Garlits,.........some folks just like to complain!

When gas started to go up in 2004, I quit using my 460 Ford dually as a daily driver, and bought a new Nissan Sentra - rated at 38MPG, but I consistantly get 40.

    I'm pretty smart, isn't she ??

Read an article some time back Denmark fuel prices may be $7.00 per gallon but that also pays for a 100% funded health care system for all of their citizens.
