grass seeding

I've seen our state highway department using some sort of seed embedded green mesh or matting on hillsides.

Anyone know what this stuff's called, if it's available on the retail market and how much it sells for?

    Here is one product here. I think the stuff the hwy dept. uses is a spray that has some kind of adhesive on it to make it stick. It's like a green foam or something.

    Some of it is simply recycled paper shredded in water with seed and fertilizer mixed in. Gives the grass a good "base" to germinate in. Not an adhesive at all.

    Yep.

    Also, just remember, if you water grass seed once, you have/need to water it every day.

    Not exactly on topic, but here NE Okla. I've found one of the best ways to seed my yard is throw seeds out when it snows in the winter. Always use "pencote" seeds *(a coating that keeps birds from eating them) and preferably seed just prior to a snowstorm. But if you use Pencote seeds, you can throw them on the snow. I threw seeds on top of ice last winter.
    The cold will cause the seeds to go dormant. And when the snow/ice melts it will suck those seeds into the ground.
    I was skeptical when I was 1st told about this. Until I tried it. The results were incredable!

    Hydroseeding is the correct term. Erosion control. Slurry is the mix. Can use biodegrateable mesh staked in .. What is the degree of banking? By the roll of 8'x 100' it varies on price from $75-125 wholesale a roll.

    I've seen what you saw here on a rural sewer project. The rolls are 6-8 ft. tall and about 50 ft. long rolled out. I also saw it at the local farm co-op. It looks like straw embedded in a fine 3/4 inch plastic mesh. They were rolling it out on the steep banks they had excavated for the sewer pipe. I didn't see them broadcasting seed so I don't know if it has seed in the mesh or you have to seed and then roll out the mesh. I'll try to call the farm co-op tomorrow and get more details. Looks like it would be good where planting on a hillside where straw may not stay. Around here straw is about $4/bale so the mesh may be cheaper when seeding a lawn, etc. I don't know what would happen to the plastic mesh when the grass came up and you tried to mow it.
