Do not scratch and sniff spot left in your truck seat where the pup has been sitting. Do not ask me how I learned this lesson

Personally, I think firearms should be treated differently when it comes to stealing. It is not like stealing a toaster or tv set. I think stealing guns should be one of those mandatory 20 year sentence crimes. Now there is some "Gun Control" I would support [;)]

I just did that yesterday. I brought home a new Taurus and took a pic to post here on G.B, I ended up emptying my gunsafe and taking pictures of all my guns and writing the serial numbers down. Today I'm going to organize a digital photo album and each pic will have the S/N as the title of the pic. Put it all on a flash drive and lock it up in a safety deposit box at the bank.

I should probly get better pics of mine, but I do have all the other info recorded on all my guns and other high dollar stuff in the house (TV, Bose stereo, ect.).

We do not have a problem out here were I live with anything dissapearing though. Kisa leave thier bikes out and the whole works in this nieghborhood and nothing ever turns up missing.

All the nieghbors watch out for everyone and we know who belongs around here and who does not.

I have a list, complete with S/N's of all the guns and electrical equipment in my house, along with full Hi-Quality pictures. All of it was put on 3 CD's. One in hidden in my house, one at my parent's house and one at my FIL's place.

I recommend everyone do the same.

My area was like that until it wasn't. The bad guys didn't send out notices that they were coming either. Now that is just rude.

I think I have all the SN#'s on my stuff , most of it is in safes .
A lesson well learned , we had a pair of handguns lifted from our shop here a while back , both recovered (had sn#'s of course)...
    What an experience !!!

All of my gun make, model, serial # and values are on a piece of paper in my safety deposit box.

All of my guns are in safes.

Don't get me wrong. I do not count the area as safe from thievery just because it does not happen around here.

All I was getting at is it is a little less likely with how everyone around here keeps an eye out for each other.

There is only one family on the whole block that causes problems and nobody here likes them so I doubt they will go around trying anything because everyone would be more than willing to turn them in. This family also knows how well armed I am and that my guns are not just for looks![;)][:D]

My lot around the house is also well lit at night with 2 street/security lights (the real big and brite ones like you find on a city street linning the roads). When I had them installed everyone joked that I was just makeing it easier to see my target![;)][:D][:o)]

The biggest deturant that I have though is the fact that I am ussually always here. And if I do go anywhere I am ussually not gone very long. So anyone who might be watching the place knows if I leave there is a very high chance that I will be back in just a couple minutes not giving them time to get much, and if I caught them in the act that there will be a gun on my person when I return!

We had a rash of break-ins around here for a while. Three or four homes had guns stolen. Even when some of the guns were recovered and id'd by the owners they couldn't get their alleged guns back and the thieves couldn't be prosecuted. They had good un-herniated attorneys who basically argued that 'with 2 million of said gun in circulation how can you be sure it is your gun?' or 'They bought them at a yard sale.' When they broke into my place and got ten long guns that wouldn't cram into the vault, I gave the detectives a print out of the missing guns with dates of purchase and from where, serial numbers, amount paid for them and a good picture of each one. Not only did I get my guns back in just a few days, but the cops where able to build an airtight case by virtue of the serial numbers. As an added bonus they had traded a few for dope and the cops were able to get search warrants for certain homes they had been wanting to get into for a long time. Personally, I think firearms should be treated differently when it comes to stealing. It is not like stealing a toaster or tv set. I think stealing guns should be one of those mandatory 20 year sentence crimes. Anyway, make the time to write down each and every serial number of your guns with a brief description of them[you'd be suprised at how little some cops know about guns other than their carry piece].Pictures showing the gun and serial number are great too, since sometimes a number can be written poorly or wrong.

Great advice...thanks for the tip...and for stopping in BDJ![8D]

Good advice. Stuff I've been knowing for a while, just haven't done it. And not only guns, as GRD said - we have lots of other valuable stuff as well. Sounds like a good project for the weekend (and I'm only waiting that long because I'm out of town during the week).

    Thanks for the reminder.

Already do that. Everything I own is on an Excel spreadsheet and I've got a photo of each one. I keep a copy on my computer, a copy on two different flash drives -- one remains in my briefcase and the other is at my parents house.

Obviously they didn't know you. Nothing wrong with telling folk what the penalties are for violating the property. Hope you see them the day they get released for the grand larceny.

Don't know that those fellas will have much to worry about soon enough. Somehow the fellas were labelled as pedophiles in jail while awaiting a court date. On a totally unrelated note; Did you know that a $28 carton of cigarettes is worth a small fortune in jail currency?

When I get a new firearm, I email description, photo and S/N to my insurance company, and have them add it to my rider.

We don't lock anything, leave keys in the cars, and only have command outdoor floods.

The Dawgs are pretty good protection.

Bad guys are welcome to anything with which they are able to leave.

I've broken into a couple of things I couldn't figure my way out of.
    Cost me a lot, too.

I've got a really good one to tell you but it would be prudent of me to resist for another 2 years.

I agree, stealing guns or musical instruments is different than stealing a tv or even cash. 20 year minimum sentence sounds about right to me.

Had the breakin and gun theif here 2 years ago. Folks are still talking about the idiot leaving the house as the owner was comming home. The call to 911 was for the cornor, no ambulance needed.
Heck it was next door to me. His were in one of those tin wal-mart safes. Mine are in a $2000.00 safe bolted to the floor with 1" steel bolts.
Guy isn't quite right , he still chuckles about it if someone mentions it. Then so might'n I.

My house got broken into in '82. I had a few guns in a glass front wooden gun cabinet. The theives stole my guns but left the paper with the serial numbers. It was right there in the cabinet. When the local constable finally got out of bed and came, the first thing out of his mouth was "you've got insurance, don't you?". When I told my insurance agent what he said, he was not surprised. Insurance paid off, rates went up, but I never saw my dad's pre-A1 1911 again. Don't have a point other than maybe an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.
