All Around Handgun for the Back Country
Let's stir the pot a little. You are hunting, back-packing, hiking in North America. What calibur hand gun would you take with you? Yes, I know if you are hunting the main calibur for the hunt is primary. Would it be the .22? Maybe the 357mag. The 41 and 44 mag are alwys good choices. Some might say the 10mm.

My choice is also 45 -- but 45 Colt. FA Model 97 in 45 Colt, 5 1/2 in bbl, loaded with 250gr XTPs make me comfortable. Being actually smaller than an original Colt SAA, it carries easily and is very accurate. Does it for me. 0 -

Hard to beat Taurus "The Judge", 45 LC and 410 bore outta the same pistol. The 45 LC is good protection, when you're starving the 410 shot shell will get you some grub, 0 -

I'd like a four-incher sometime. But since I have the 6-incher, it's way down on my list.0 -
Model 83 Freedom Arms 454 Casull 6" in a sholder holster under my vest is standard attire when I saddle up and leave the truck or trailhead, might not be the quickest draw rig, but it's tight and out of the way if I need to rope and doctor something yet handy in case Ursus Horribilus enters the picture 0 -

YOS, have you done any reloading for the .480? I loaded some 325 Speer's with 25g of H110 last night but haven't tried them yet. I would like to try some lead bullets but can't find any load data for them.0 -

Haven't done any reloading yet, but I plan to use laser cast bullets from Oregon Trail when I load for my full size SRH. As for my Alaskan, I probably stick with the 275gr bullets from Speer and maybe some of the 325gr. Here's what I got from Oregon Trail for their laser cast bullets:
