    LF,

From my experience, those young men take a whole lot off that field other than football. The dedication and work ethic learned from the program is something they carry with them their entire lives. The heat, bruises, muscle cramps, etc. are just obstacles that they overcome and part of the price they pay to stand out above the rest. If it were easy, everyone in the school would do it. I had the fortune to play for the most winningest coach in US history, and yes it was all about football, but the bigger picture was all about life.

quote:The poor little guys having to run in this heat with all that gear on just makes you cringe to think about it.

Think about the soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan who wear heavier gear and have to run farther distances and are getting shot at in the process, and they're still expected to keep a somewhat level head so they can do their job and keep themselves and their buddies alive. What those kids on the football field go through is nothing compared to that. Just some food for thought.

Young man, almost 16 years old died not too far from here yesterday at football practice. Fell over dead on the field. I know the soldiers in Iran and Afghanistan have it bad, but IMHO...it's too dang hot to have those kids out there in full pads in the middle of the day. They are kids! And you here every year about a couple of them dying. I feel for them. You can go to the Jackson Sun website and read about this kid from Dyer, TN dying.

Our practice is late in the day....and the mothers are all camped out in chairs around the fence. We watch for the water breaks and make certain our babies are not hurt. When they get a bit older they don't let the moms camp out like this.....and I don't think I will be able to handle that. We will deal with that when it comes.

Two-a-days in high school were by far the hardest thing I had done up to then. I never was in that good physical condition after football. I still can't believe I stuck it out, but almost no one quit. I'm sure I learned something from it, but haven't a clue what it was.
