Critical thinking and consistent values application are two things our society is in short supply of.

easy. they get more for themselves out of that kind of logic.

nunn, for example. a while ago, he told his story about how he ran out of gas, went to someone's house to ask for gas, the guy wouldn't give it to him, so he just walked right over, took it, and walked off.

now he's upset (I suppose, rightfully so) because the cops over there in houston wrongfully removed his son from where he was living at the time.

nunn wants the cops to be fair to his son, but was nunn not being fair to the owner of the gas can?

nunn doesn't go along with the cops in houston doing what they think they had to do, but wasn't nunn "doing what he had to do" when he took the gas?

a lot of people demand fairness from others but they won't give as much in return. look around you. it's like that all the time.

    Back up, hoss!

I didn't "take" any gasoline from anybody. I picked up a can that had about a gallon in it. I gave its owner a $5.00 bill. (Gas was selling for under a buck a gallon at the time.) I brought the can back when I was done with it. The guy had several cans of gasoline around his shop, where he was apparently engaged in the business of lawn mower repair. I may have inconvenienced him a bit, but I compensated him for his trouble and did not steal from him. I don't steal and I won't.

The cop in Houston were not "doing what he had to do." Doing what he had to do in that situation would have been to keep the peace ONLY, and not take a position, and not take sides in the argument, and refer the people involved to Justice Court.

the guy said it wasn't for sale. he didn't want to give it to you. you took it.

with those cops in houston, you have an idea of what would have been appropriate (and I'd agree with you on that one), "the law" has an idea what would have been appropriate (which is pretty much the same as what you and I would think), but those cops disregarded all that and did what they thought was right.

now, it's just my opinion, but I think you were stepping on that guy's toes when you took his gas can. ...and now, the cops are stepping on your toes -they use the same logic as you did, "doing what you gotta do", you think you're in the right- and you don't like it.

I think that illustrates to p3skyking the logic he was asking about.

    you may not agree.

Personally, I don't think either one is right. Taking the gas can is akin to condemning someones property for public use and paying them whatever is deemed fit. Selling under duress, extortion. A legal way to steal.

Same as illegally kicking Dave's boy out without ample time to find new quarters. Texas does have some strange laws. Here, anyone not on the lease is considered a guest subject to the homeowners whim. I don't know what put a bug up the mothers ass but being as they were friends, she should have given him some time to move.

Both actions have taken the freedom to choose away from someone.

Addendum; This question occured to me after posting. Dave, would the Texas DPS have arrested a punk that took the gas can and left $5. if the man had complained?

I've been in university teaching for almost 23 years, and I have seen a steady decline among students regarding their willingness to focus and concentrate on things in which they have limited interest (e.g., schoolwork, feedback). I even include a statement on the first page of the class manual that says CONCENTRATION (yes, I use caps in about 36-point type) is vital to getting a better grade. Sometimes I would swear some class members see each day's work as an independent, unrelated event in relation to previous days' and weeks' work. I suppose the lack-of-concentration trend is out there in the general population, too, but out there I can more easily ignore it.

I see more and more inconsistancy in post now. It's like people cannot think far enough ahead to see the results of their actions.
People express views and later, on a thread with different characters but much the same situation, change those views to exact opposites.

You always read about some deceased jackass that worked under his car held up by only a jack. Not real bright.
What was he thinking as all that metal came to rest squarely on his body? I'm sure the fellow that had a safe fall on him did not plan for that to happen, but hey! Don't find yourself in that position.

An ongoing thread has posters saying old people have a right to break a covenent about having children present, yet those same people would loudly protest someone breaking a deal with them.

    Where's the logic in that?

Yes. and I understand what you said in the first paragraph, but you lost me at the senseless name calling, I would have used the term "poor ba$tard". And when I say poor I mean both physically and spiritually.

Huh? The verbage used is the preference of the poster, but I'll run a list of synonyms by you next time. [xx(][;)]

Business agreements that are legal are one thing. A child's safety and livelihood is another. Hard hearted folks want to go by the written word and not allow the grandparents time to come within compliance by either finding the child a safe, loving home or selling out. As long as they are trying to rectify the situation, and a child's life is involved, I think a little patience is fair. [;)]

How many times have you run a red light that was slow or failed to trigger when you were the only car at the intersection? The law is the law![}:)]

But it's okay to kick a 3 year old out when the grandparents are trying to sell out? Talk about inconsistent!

Lots of folks have an extremely short attention span which I believe is the result of spending too much time in front of the tv. Then there are the people who have invested themselves emotionally in a particular idea and refuse to allow themselves to admit that they may be wrong or that there is more than one way to look at something.

But, to answer the question, yes, I know 3 people who think. No, wait, make that 2. Ok, one of my cats appears to be in deep thought most of the time.

True....but a sale is made once a price is agreed to by both parties, and paid [}:)]

I have a Remington 760 that is worth a couple of hundred bucks. My dad gave it to me as a graduation present. If you wanted to buy it, I would say no. That doesn't give you a green light to toss $2,000 at me and take it.

I doubt the can of gas had any sentimental value attached, but still...

sorry nunn i have to disagree with your logic on this one

so you admit it wasn't stealing because you tossed 5X the price of gas at him, so that makes it ok, even though you where told the answer is no?, but you also implicate it would have been stealing if you didn't leave the money?

so a guy can ask a woman for sex, and if she says no, he can take it anyway as long as he leaves her more money than the going rate for a prostitute?, now remember everything is for sale

Danny, nothing inconsistent about it. The rules were in effect when the little girl came to stay. No such rules were in effect in Houston. Different premise in effect.
From your post, I can't tell if you have a soft spot for just Americans or little girls. I am not for illegal immigration, in fact far from it. I want the rules enforced. Mexicans belong in Mexico and HOA's set rules for their neighborhood.
I see your post as inconsistent. Kick out little Mexican girls from their American homes, but let the little girl in Florida stay illegally. The situations seem strikingly similar overall.

As far as the old folks being lousy parents, I figure if their daughter wasn't an only child, there would be a brother or sister the little girl could live with. Absent a brother or sister, their failure to properly raise a child rate is 100%.

Chance any of this banter matters a damn is 0%.[:0]

No, I love all kids. I was pointing out that your comparison was illegitimate because one was a legal child living in her country of citizenship cover by the constitution of her country and as such was cover under the bill of rights, while the other one had no rights under the constitution and was in the country illegally and by her parents hand. Therefore she should have been returned home with her parents.

How can you make a stretch from one to the other?

My other point was, Mark as a grown man, shouldn't be evicted (and I agree) yet the three year old should be removed today in your eyes. Pretty dang inconsistent think to me.

Where does a little patience from the HOA come in to play in your eyes? Do you think they should have just put the child up for adoption or given her to child protective services because some old coot wants to complain? I think if it were your grandchild, you'd be singing a different tune, but maybe not.

Even a judge would allow time for the grandparents to sell their home before he would evict a child. The law calls it mitigating circumstances.

do the grand parents have no place in this, did the 3 yr old just move in on her on, did the grand parents know it was wrong, and
against the contract they agreed to live by. i love kids as much as
any one that is why i would not put one in this situation like the grand parents did, was it 2-21/2 years ago
