Two significant milestones reached today
Well, today is October 24th and I woke up, so not only is it a good day, its official. I turned 62 today and I'm scheduled to receive my first Social Security Electronic Deposit on December 26th. I think that makes me safely grandfathered into the Social Security System and our altruistic (substitute your favorite antonym) government can't take it away retroactively. I wasn't sure I'd live to see 62 not to mention Social Security still being available to me. We retired early and while we are fortunate enough to be self sufficient, Social Security certainly will nicely augment our other income.
The second milestone reached today is our 31st wedding anniversary. Yep, 31 years ago my wife tricked me into getting married on my birthday. She says she wasn't thinking when she suggested that date, but I think her real motives were twofold; 1) I'd always remember our anniversary and 2) one less gift she'd have to buy me, a one gift fits all sort of deal.
However, I have to admit I did get a nice "one gift fits all birthday/anniversary present"; a pair of Lucchese Classic Handmade boots. Ever since we retired and moved back to Texas I've wanted a pair of "Cowboy Boots". I haven't had a pair of western style boots since I was a little kid living in south and west Texas. So, I'll probably be walking a little funny for a while!
Anyone else share a birthday or anniversary today?

I did the same. Checked what I'd be receiving from Soc Security, and realized with it plus my job retirement pension, and military pension combined, I'd get a substantial raise by retiring. I would have been making less working than I do retired. 0 -

Thanks everyone! It is nice to settle into your later life with someone you love and enjoy doing things with and see the fruits of your labor come to fruition! We have our weekly church community group gathering tonight, so last night we went to a local steakhouse and celebrated my birthday. We usually celebrate our anniversary separately, so Mrs. Old-Colts chooses the restaurant for that celebration and I think I know what her choice will be this year.
kimi - I didn't go out to my favorite local "Toy Stores" today since I'm still building my "Toy Fund" to purchase a Colt Single Action shipped to Austin, Texas in 1896.[8D]
mateo - Since the Handmade boots can be sent back to Lucchese and restored to new condition, I doubt that I will outlive them![:0]

beneteau - Congrats to you too! I retired in January 2006 and was 60 at the time, so I've had to wait on Social Security. That whooping 2.3% Cost of Living increase will help contribute to my "Toy Fund".
oldgunner - I had just hit the wall so to speak and was ready for a change. I hadn't considered retiring at 60, but when I actually looked at the numbers and realized I could do it, it was a no brainer and I've never looked back. Congrats to you also!

Too young for social security. But I'm getting Federal retirement pension. (The 20yr elegibility kind).
Question: if social security goes up 2.3%, will federal retirement also increase? I haven't received any notice to that effect. Anybody know? Joe0 -
