Idiot on the radio today.............

I was listening to the radio today and they were interviewing some cop that said they invented the colt .45 to take down the Japanese in WW2 because they were high on methanphetamines. He also went on to say that he did meth and weed while on the job because the meth "enhanced" his senses. The best part was that the radio hosts did not flame this guy for what he was doing on the job, when he was supposed to be protecting peoples lives and property.

    Actually is was from the anemic performance of the 38 caliber revolvers against the Moro tribes in the philippines IIRC. The 38 used at the time was not knocking the stuffing out of the drunk/drugged tribesmen who took six rounds in the chest and still hacked off parts of the shooter.

    Actually it was because of insurgents in the Phillipines, when the USA occupied the island as our territory after the War with Spain.

    Jungle muslim terrorists attacked while heavily wrapped in clothing gear, and the small service revolvers wouldn't drop them before they could weild a machete. That area is still hot, and it is where the Chistian missionaries were captured and some were killed about 10 years ago.

    That is why the 45 cal came into being.

    It wasnt Rush, it was a caller that called into a show. Not to mention the 1911 Colt 45 was made in 1911, correct?

    I think 1911 was the year it was accepted by the Army.

    I remember hearing the 45 was introduced to stop the Phillipine terrorists when they were juiced up. The 38 special was not adequate for stopping the bad guys. The British introduced the Webley 455 about the same time for African concerns again for chemically modified adversaries.

    I don't think it was a .38 Special that they were using, but rather the .38 S&W. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

    The U.S. Army was using the .38 Colt caliber in a new-fangled double-action revolver, made by Colt. It was not an effective stopper during the difficulty in the Phillipines. The Army dusted off the supply of Single Action Army .45 revolvers and issued them, and results improved. It was partly because of this experience that the Army insisted on a handgun of .45 caliber when they tested automatics and ultimately accepted the Colt 1911.

    As Nunn said- problem with the .38 Colt, not .38 Special. The Moro Insurectos in the Phiilipines shortly after turn of the 20th century. The .45 Colt has been around since the heyday of the Cowboy. US selected the .45 Auto (as in .45 ACP), adopted in 1911. So no, not WWII, not Japanese, and in that light, would have SERIOUS doubts that the caller was a real LEO. For pity's sake, take a look at any of the references on the history of the 1911 pistol (the name should be a strong hint of when it was adopted !)

    The .45 Colt was introduced in 1873 by Colt for the Peacemaker.
    The Army adopted the cartridge and revolver in 1875..dropped it in 1892...whereupon they replaced it with the .38 Long Colt.

    The .45 Automatic (.45 ACP)cartridge was developed by John Browning in 1905..adopted by the military in 1911.
