Military "promotion" stories--Have one?
Marine Air Wing 1965-1971
I was promoted PFC (E-2) right out of boot camp.
Four (4) years later I was "selected" to be one (1) of about 50---out of a squadron of about 250 to stand a "junk-on-the-bunk" inspection for a visiting Marine "General". Finally, the General stands before me and asks "how long have you been in the Marines"--I answer "4 years, Sir"--he turns and looks at my First Sgt.---turns back to me--looks at my sleeve and asks "how long have you been a PFC"--I answer "4 years, Sir"--he asks "do you have anything against you on your record"--I answer "nothing that I'm aware of, Sir"---he turns to my First Sgt.--"I want to see this man's records as soon as this inspection is over"---turns to me "if there is nothing negative in your records and you are not promoted before I leave this base (the following day) I'll promote you, myself"
I was promoted to Lance Corporal (E-3)--Whoopie!---about 2 hours later.
