remington 308 PSS problems?
I have the above rifle, an early model I am told with 24" barrel. I sighted it in with tried and tru reloads for 100 yards, then it shot over 14" low at 200 yards? I tried 2 other loads, one factory, with similar results. I have a new bushnell 4200, 6 x 24 on it. I fired the ammo in another 308 and it acted properly as it has done for years.
the same day at the range, I sighted in 5 other new rifles for 100 and 200 yards with proper results for a friend with a temporary back injury. I think this rules out me as the problem and the ammo worked well in the other gun? I realize this problem is 'impossible' so what the heck is going on? thanks for your help

I do not know how a rifle could possibly do that
is the scope like 5" above bore?
are you sure the reloads are good?
grouped well at both ranges?[:D
mine will hit about 2" low at 200yd with a 100 yd zero
1. check mounts and bases( you should be using the lowest steel mounts, properly tightened)
2. check adjustments on scope @100 yds (do a box - fire a group, up 15 fire another , left 15, fire another down 15 , fire another, righ 15 and you should hit in same place.
3.try another ammo

sight it in @ 200 , see where it hits at 100, just to see if it is still doing it? 0 -
or,....try mic'ing the bore and see if it is oversized. Sounds like a terrible gas seal

come to think of it, we shot it at 100, sighted at 200, about 3" group according to my records on a windy day, then off the paper at 100? thanks! 0 -

Some barrels are very sensitive to different bullets.
I have a Rem 700LTR and it drills 168 match bullets but scatters 165 Rem PSP types. In fact it hates almost any but a few bullets and those it loves.
My point is more info on what you are doing. What bullets, what twist rate? Have you bore sighted the gun at 100 yards?
Line up the bore without the bolt in the action with a nice circle target at 100 with the gun firmly rested. Where is the scope when you do that? Get the scope centered with the target centered in the bore and go from there.
I am one that does not agree with it must be a low scope to work well.
German snipers were known to be damn good with those extremely high mounts and I doubt you can convince an old WWII GI vet they were not accurate with them. It is certainly easier to line up a lower scope but that is about it. We all have opinions but it being high would not cause this problem.

I WAS USING BLACK HILS GODL WITH THE 165 X and 165 partiton with 41.8 of 4064, and a similar hand load with 150's sierra's. I think I'll replace the bases and start over! thanks! [or get some double ought buck an a 10 ga. if all else fails!]

OL, Believe me I have been there with the LTR.
I have a R-700 Hart match barrel that will shoot anything at all.
The LTR shot 165 PSP at 3 inches at 100 yards and a friend gave me 3 rounds of 168 HPBTM Federal match ammo.
2 went through the same hole and one was half on those.
Hmmmmmm, this wants one thing.
Well, it turns out it also likes 175gr match bullets. Nosler or Sierra, either are fine!
155 match? Nope, 2.5 inches!
I would suggest you try 168gr HPBT-Match Noslers or Sierras. I am guessing this is a 1/10 twist and is finicky.
After that sell it!

sounds like good advice wulfman! thanks for your help. if we ever get warm weather and no wind, I'll give her another last try with the new mounts and some variety of loads! happy hunting, bob 0
