Private Health Insurance Question
Does anyone on here purchase health insurance through somewhere else other than your employer? My wifes' insurance through her work sucks and it costs us about $500 a month. Any pointers or links would be greatly appericated. Thanks in advance, Mike.

depends on the part of the country you live. i have BCBS, buts that's through employer, i would call them and see if there not in your area then ask them if they know or just Google: (Insert state here) Health Insurance 0 -
$500/month? That's about what it costs buying it yourself. You're better off getting a job that pays for your health insurance. Better yet do without and don't get sick.

Spoken like a true idiot! Not getting sick is fine. But what about falling and breaking an arm, or having some fool pull out in front of you on the highway? How do you prepare for that? With health care costs they way they are today you have to protect yourself. $500 per month is not bad. For my family (wife and 2 kids) the cost is nearly $1500 per month. And that is not really good coverage, just catastrophic. Most companies are getting away from writing individual health coverage for the long term. Good luck whatever you do.0 -
Wow! I didn't realize health care cost that much!!! 0 -

I've owned my own business for 12 years now. I guess I could have an auction, sell everything, and get a job at Mcdonalds flipping burgers. I hear they offer health insurance now. But I would be taking about a $90,000 a year pay cut.
It's not the $500 they take out of her check every month that is bad. The coverage we get for that is what is bad. One of her prescriptions today alone cost me $250 because her insurance has a $1000 per year cap on medications and we went over that.0 -

Thanks, I searched and found many other companies with comparable prices as we pay now with better coverage and less deductables. Didn't know I would find so many different insurance companys.0 -
For the last 5 years I have had Nationwide health coverage. Its decent, cost me $75 a month. I was 18 when I started it though. I just recently stopped it due to finishing school and my wife getting a job that has good benefits. My current job also has good health insurance. Anyways, my coverage was like this. $35 copay for doctors visits, $10 and $15 prescriptions, 1 million total coverage, 2500 yearly deductible. 0 -

When you young and healthy that doesn't sound bad. Father-in-law had surgery for pancreatic cancer last October. Hospital bill ALONE was $145,000!!! It does include the meds he had in the hospital and does include 5 nights in ICU but that doesn't include all the bills from the surgeons and other docs that saw him, plus all the follow-up visits to them that are still on-going. Radiation was $1800 per week for 16 weeks, chemo was $2400 a week for 12 weeks. That million doesn't sound like so much anymore!0 -
A tidbit to ponder:
I dropped the "auto medical" carrier on my car's insurance. Come to find out that the auto medical clause will not pay a cent if you already have medical insurance. They don't tell you that, do they? So, why pay for the premium if you can't cash in.
My auto insurance was AIG. I suggest you get with your company/broker and look into this, if you've a mind to. Best, Joe0 -

That may be true, I don't know, I'll call my agent in the morning. But, it will cover any passenger or victim of your wreck. That is pretty cheap peace of mind coverage in my book.0 -
For me...a Federal Civil Servant....I would have to sacrifice half a months pay to get health insurance....for my family.
We have Tricare but it isn't worth much. There is no surgical facilities on Guam and the HMO won't cover off island needs.
I'm phacked and pray in God for our health.[V]0 -

that's just the opposite of most states. you also have to consider that if you wreck, the med payments can be used for anybody in your car. ever transport children?

It is when you're not paying anything at the moment. That's one thing I'll miss about the Army.0 -

It isn't when you have 1 or 2 people with medical problems in your family.

Change your name to "Pedro Jesus Hernandez" and it won't cost you anything. [:(!] 0 -

If you own your own business, why not get a company plan for yourself and your wife through your business? There are other options, but it's something to consider. I set my company up with Federated. My coverage is good and relatively inexpensive, but it's REALLY high for women.
Another option to consider might be Farm Bureau. I've got a couple of family members who buy insurance through them who are self-employed.0
