I'm pretty darn sure that the Government has access to any database that might strike their fancy, NRA, GOA, JPFO, NAMBLA, Communist Party of America, La Raza, literally any database they choose.
IMO seeking a UPIN from the FBI/ATF is just one more list, not anything really new.
One time a buddy of mine said that when the time comes to confiscate firearms the government will just summarily execute all known gun freaks, including members of the NRA, GOA, and so forth.

I believe you are right.
Everything is logged under your social security number anyway.
Why should anyone be afraid of the UPIN number.
I would say to atleast try to get one.
I have had guys flat out denied the right to purchase a firearm and apply for the UPIN and then when they receive and use it they pass instantly.
From what I have seen it takes about 30 days to get your UPIN.0 -

Right now it is illegal for the federal goverment to keep a data base of firearms owners / purchases, the only way for them to compile any lists is from out of business dealers (which is illegal) and by individuals giving them permission to keep their information on file.
To me it dosen't matter, I have held a 0-1 license since about 1988, I am sure if and when they get the party started, I will be one on the "A" list to get "invited".

It's funny how the NICS works. I have a friend who has to wait several days to get approved EVERY TIME.

It also has to do with your military experiance.
I find that EVERYONE who fills out a 4473 who has been in the military, gets my call forwarded to a supervising NICS Examiner.0 -

in utah the NICS background is waived for those who hold a CCW, they may call to verify that it is still current but no fees to do that.
colorado they do NICS everytime no matter what. I have had no problems yet, and will do what ever it takes (like getting a UPIN #)if it will safe time.0
