Diesel Chip Change - Worth it? Is it Real?
I've got a '97 Ford F250 Super Duty diesel pickup. It's about broke in - only 115,000 miles on it.
So far, I've resisted putting a high-performance chip into the ECM, but with diesel bumping $3 per gallon, I'm wondering if now might not be the time to do it.
Has anyone tried these things? What do they really do? Increase turbocharger boost? For my big diesel, the manufacturer's brochures say to expect another 70 hp. Is this real?
Is there a fuel mileage improvement? Is there a downside?
I'd like to hear from anyone who has actually used one of these things.

My broth has a Chevy 2500 with the Duramax/Alison combo. He swears by the chip he put in. He says that he picked up 2 MPG and a ton of tourque. He is always pulling a huge trailer with his so he wanted the extra power. I do not know for myself as it is not my truck and my brother has been known to over-exagerate a bit. I have a Chev Duramax have had a downloader since new with the +85 horse setting programmed into the ECM. I gained about 1.3 MPG. Have some friends with Fords and they are 65 HP over and they also gained 1+ MPG. Downside is if you play you pay. Tires; and can be heck on auto trannys. When you increase HP you are adding fuel. If you pull and use that HP you should have a Pyrometer, boost gauge and larger exhaust system, and better air intake. HP costs money. 0
